Do you use a bug coat ? I do and it helps. I also use mangrove sun gloves (designed for fishing the bonefish flats) to protect my hands. Don't forget your Avon skin so soft. Plus I smoke which helps a lot.

You are right about the breeding.....in what is supposedly a low biomass environment, it beats me as to where several solar masses of the little bu****s come from.

I agree with malevans - bug suit is probably the way to go and for $40, well worth the money.

cover yourself from head to foot with double sided sticky tape ,they`l be so engrossed with getting free they will not bite ,you could also though become a haven for insect eating birds and bats a very natural disguise you`l agree ,beats looking like a tree

Believe NOTHING anyones says or writes unless you witness it yourself and even then your eyes can deceive you

None of this "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" crap it just means i have at least two enemies!

I use the Avon Skin So Soft when they get really bad - also those funny looking Midgee Net things that you put over your head, they are great.

Agree with Leon 101% about the clegs/horse flies - can be nasty pieces of work, and you can whack one, and it just gets straight back up. My cousin got a bite from one before and the reaction made his hand came up double in size - his wife was annoyed as it did not bite him somewhere else (haha)

Bugwear stuff is made in Scotland, I have a Bugcoat from US via Germany. I prefer it as it is white rather than dark green which is better when its sunny and hot. It also sort of puts the camo debate to bed :D

Saw a posting on the Wild Skye weblog that the midges are out in gorce this weekend!.

Jungle formula expidition strength works ok (but not fantastic).... if all else fails antihistamines help you get to sleep at night (ideally ones that ARE sedative). I once ran out and spent several hours in the middle of the night lying with cold wet towels round my legs. Now I check I have several bottles of everything I can think of before any trip to Scotland!
