I can't get used to those hook tiers - they seem harder to use than just tying the bloody thing. But then I suppose I learnt to tie spade ends at the age of 10 or 11, and routinely used #22 and #24 hooks in the Winter - it's grim oop North!

By the way, I prefer this style of tying (ignore the hair-riggery, just the whipping knot we're interested in) :

I'm not at all sure that you don't end up with the same knot, possibly reversed, but the first way is simpler to tie.

I have a problem with my right hand, lacking any feeling in the fingers...and I'm right handed, so tying small spade ends isn't feasible.

A friend saw me buying pre-tied hooklengths and went mad -'bl**dy idiot, why not ask for help?'

Well, Leon Roskilly showed me how to use a matchman, ages ago, which is great for larger sized hooks of 14' and larger, but I simply can't handle anything smaller.

So I now have an agreement with my friend Jamie - I tie his carp rigs, he ties my smaller s/e rigs.

Fair trade and actually good fun when you have a few beers when the ladies are socialising.

Yes, that is the way I tie mine except that the line comes up the back of the spade as opposed to the front as shown in the second diagram.

Hi Tinca, it occurs to me that if the line runs up the back of the shank, the spade presses into the line and could possible damage it. Apart from which it prevents the hook from hanging flat, as the line will tilt the hook forwards.

This was what was explained to me when I first started fishing, so it's something I just grew to accept as the norm.

It's still interesting to hear alternative takes on a topic, though.

TT your line should come off the front of the spade otherwise you could finnish up with the spade cutting through your line bud.

Tigger, you are so right. I have just tied one up as I always do and the line comes off the front. What a plonker :hammer: and I have only been doing them for 50 years

Alan, I think it is a warning that I am going round the twist or putting it correctly arse about face :)

No worries cock, your just showing your age :P;) I knew you'd just wrote it down wrong and you know better than me how to tie one.

Just a thought for anyone tying one and your line comes off the back, just hold the hook with one hand and squeeze the knot with your other and turn it till it lines up on the front of the shank then pull your line tight. When I tie mine they very often come off the back but before pulling completly tight I just twist the knot round to the front and pull totally tight.
