Bitting the Bullet . . .

Recommended Posts

When I say XP I always mean XP Pro. I've never had or used a machine with XP Home. Not much use in our 'Home' because we have a f/s and a domain.

whats a "f/s" ?

got a copy of pro but home seems to have everything i need ,wary of different versions are they different is home just pro i disguise?

"upgrade" disks are also full version i have found the full version just likes a clean install instead but you can also do a clean full install with an upgrade disk ,funny that

there are no other graphics cards other than nvidia :D
That used to be my opinion too chesters, but nvidia have been losing their way a wee bit of late.

This is a pretty good card for the money.

mainly because nvidia are concentrating on multi core gpu's now (the price is dropping fast),the best card they did was the fx7900 gtx blistering and none of the 8000 series could beat it.

i never trust mag reviews they rarely give bad results for new cards after all they want the next one free as well :D

in their multi (whatever) reviews they do the high end cards fare well ,ofcourse they should they are 3 times the price ,perhaps a more fairer way of testing based on price could be done using all cards (or whatever) in categories based on price

most games are programmed for nvidia chips anyway and that radion looks like its an overclocked version running hot ,i wonder if over the counter versions are as good ;)

nvidia cards in an nvidia mobo also have an edge

Your a terrible cynic chesters ;) I can show you PLENTY of reviews in PC Pro where they have slated kit. PC Pro is about the only mag that does do good reviews. It runs hot because it,s a pre production with a crappy heat sink from an earlier model. BTW games are in general not written for one card or another but are written for DX9 or DX10. This is a hardware abstraction layer that allows you to write software that will run on any card as long as the card and the game both support DX. Edited by corydoras

Chesters - XP-home is XP-pro with many of the features disabled.

TNTC (too numerous to count) and in many cases, not things you'd need or miss. Here is a pretty good overview of the differences.

The thing not mentioned in that piece is that some of the restrictions also seemed to have a bit of an overall effect on performance. Home is a bit slower doing some tasks in addition to having a long list of tasks that are impossible.

Interest in the public beta of Windows 7 (Build 7000 i think) looks to be keen. From the M$ site.

Thanks for your interest in the Windows 7 Beta. The volume has been phenomenal—we're in the process of adding more servers to handle the demand. We're sorry for the delay and we'll re-post the Beta as soon as we can ensure a quality download experience

It's an ISO, first come first served. 2,000,000 max.

hmmm , i can monitor a network ,i can remote assist (never tried to use my machine as a server though) ,it can see dual cpu's (my son had a mobo with two on using home) whether it could use both is unknown?

i suggest the difference is far smaller than you think and whilst many features are disabled can be enabled by the user ;) no doubt more sit waiting until they are triggered by some event or hardware :)

hmmm some is ,probably more is if you look hard enough

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/06/13/c...t-reinstalling/

if xp home now sees itself as pro could you use a pro disk to "repair" the installation to full pro????? i have a full instal version of pro that requires a clean install ,no problem if my machine goes tits up but it hasnt.

there used to be tricks to "upgrade" 98 to xp using full install xp disks are there tricks for "upgrading" full versions of pro into home???

note my disk isnt a grubby version its a copy from the uni that has many thousands of licences for installing xp on anything they wish :D

rather than a small upgrade to pro i would prefer a dual boot xp and 64bit xp but my source is at a different uni learning more tricks
