avon/quiver rod test curves

Recommended Posts

i see your point,i just would like to land one if i hook one there not all 30's!!but it is a very weedy venue,i have for a while used a 9 n a half ft sundrige leger rod bought when i was 15!perfect for jungle warfare with the chub n barbel, and ive had good fish on it even carp to 16lb from a stillwater but on a river it feels undergunned its test is about 1lb 4oz,plus it doesnt have a quiver tip,no ther not for "chucking out method feeders" but they are very much at home with in-lines for tench and bream or smaller feeders doesnt have to be a method feeder.and for the last time im not fishing for 30lb carp! like i said they are in there and i thought why have a rod that wont handle one in the flow,if i do hook one, wich using the baits i use wouldnt be impossible!but at the same time not effect the fight/playing action of barbel/chub.

Ratty, you seem to be getting a bit err, ratty mate. You said you felt that you may be going over the top at 1.75lb test curve, but having ordered it guess you are stuck with it!!.At the end of the day,if you are happy and confident in using it then that is all that matters.

Russ I hear what you are saying ie the main target will be the chub and barbel but a big carp could come along.Due to this I would be more inclined to let the main species to be expected and possibley more importantly the conditions ie the amount of weed/flow dictate the choice of TC.The traditional Avon rod has always been 1 1/4lbTC this was also the accepted TC for stillwater tench and bream rods too for a long time.I have found these days that with the much higher average size of tench and bream a 1 3/4 TC rod isnt too much.A lot of river barbel anglers have stepped up their tackle to leaving the traditional Avon rod behind for 2lb TC rods. Not knowing the water and situation you are in I would initially say that a 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 rod would certainly cover your barbell and still water requirements but maybe a little to heavy for your chub fishing.Obviously you must make a compromise. To make the best you need to decide just how much of each type of fishing you will be doing and choose acordingly. No point in getting the Avon rod if you are going to be hooking 30lb carp every day but just as daft to get a 2lb carp rod if you are only going to hook one carp a year, see what I mean? I would be more than confident in landing a carp regardless of the flow/weed on either the 1.5 or 1.75 rod,not perfect admitedly but still no problem.

To sum up mate I would try and borrow both a 1.5 and a 1.75 give them a go to see which you find best for the bulk of your fishing and just accept that either will end up being a little to much for the perfect chub rod and a little to light to be perfect for the occaisional 30lb carp that will hopefully grace your net!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Ratty.

There is no question of me debating anything, as I read it you asked a question of which rod to use for Carp, Barbel and Chub in a fast flowing weedy river. I gave you my opinion, which seems to conflict with other posters.

The final decision is yours, so you are still stuck as to whether you use a 1.5 or a 1.75 tc.

In this short thread I have been accused of being sarcastic, which certainly was not my intention, and of giving you advice that would be massive over kill.

I wish you luck with what ever choice of rod you make, and bring in a bigun.

No debate.

Nuff said.

thank you!!thats how i should have posted the first message!!you've hit the nail on the head budgie,i want a good strong rod BUT i know a 1.75 rod will be to heavy for chub,im gonna try and reorder the 1.5 version,i sure aint going to hook carp everyday but i need something with some back bone, your right with most barbel specialist are using 2lb tc rods,as the barbel are getting bigger.saying that the chub ive aught previously where not taken on quivertip but on straight rod tip tatics, also hooked 2 bream that gave tiny dropbacks so if i can spot them bites,a 1.75 with quiver top on should be ok even for chub? NUGG-sorry mate if i was funny with ya- CHUBY and you to mate sorry.
