The price of tackle

Went to stock up with a few bits and pieces today. Wanted some of those swivels with one large eye. £3.35 for a packet of 8? Surely can't be right I asked?

I've not bought much for some weks, and did wonder how the shop was coping, especially with all the bad weather and snow and ice. No need to worry any more.

I suspect they were 'Carp' swivels.

Two of my local angling shops have both taken to closing at four o-clock, presumably to cut down on costs. The third is moving next to Tesco! I think that I know which one will survive!!

Went down to Deerdrink Pool last week, to try some American-style bugs for the resident chub and perch.

Didn't have a bite, didn't lose any gear, but did find, in three different places :-

A "controller" type float for floaters.

A nice new baiting needle for hair-rigged boilies and the like.

A packet of Raptor size 5 hooks with seven nice new hooks inside.

Two more floats were adorning the trees but as I had no heavy retrieving gear with me, they had to stay there.

.....also hooked and landed someone's rig. Brought it home, cut up and binned the nylon, busted and binned the rusty hook, but put two nice shiny swivels and a couple of AAA shot into my tackle box.

Don't worry about the tackle shop Den, what with the high prices and with affluent carp fishers that can afford to leave gear on the bank, they are doing alright..... :)

Certainly makes you wonder how I managed to pick up a load of these for £2 a piece last week, is a pack of swivels costs that much to make!

I doubt the tackle shop can do much on the prices to help you out Den as they are fixed by the manufacturer!

I have heard that tackle this year will be alot more expensive the the last few... If you want something big get in now!

You are right Peter, it doesn't just apply to swivels. I winced as I looked around the shop, almost every little item has been MARKED UP by about a £1.

I can get stuff much cheaper on the net, but where would I buy my maggots?

Another moan here :) I was going to send for for some pellets, but thought twice when I found the delivery cost was £25.50 (more than the price of one sack of pellet!

Wish my pensions would go up that much each year.

Dave, I am always picking up swivels and bits, especially those essential items of carp gear called Lead clips...................trouble is, I don't use them :)

Perhaps I should set up a stall selling recovered tackle.

I'm not so sure about the legality of price hiking of existing stock either!! That aside, blatant price rises are hardly likely to endear a shopkeeper to their customers, even those who do understand the tenuous position that many traders are in. Most of us who are in some form of retail trade are having to cut costs and tighten our belts. Some have already done that and price rises are inevitable, but done to excess it just hastens the inevitable, as customers use their feet, or their keyboards.

Well I have just gone elsewhere, bought 50 big eye swivels for £4 post free (saved about £12.50 on shop price) and 100 No 8 swivels for 3.50 inc postage.
