Whilst Argos gear is in general OK I really do think that buying your gear from a specialist is more likely to produce a balanced set of tackle. There are many companies that are offering good deals via mail order and you may be pleasantly surprised by what your local tackle shop can come up with.

One thing to consider though - you are actually allowed to catch carp using a float - it isn't illegal or banned. Spool up some 6lb or 8lb line and there is no reason why you shouldn't take your float rod and use that. Provided you aren't targetting big carp ie 15lb+, and provided the water isn't full of snags then there's no reason why you shouldn't land them and have a lot more fun playing them than on a 2lb tc carp rod. Just don't try and bully them!

My two penny worth is that if they can provide something reasonable within your budget try and support your local tackle shop. Nothing can beat going down there and having the chat face to face.

You may feel uncomfortable about talking openly if your main kit is all from Argos.

I was outa carp fishing for a good few years. I went to my local tackle shop and explained this. I told him my budget and he supplied the lot to me, + 15% discount. So it is a good idea to talk to your local tackle dealer. Good luck.

Ok So If i go to my local dealer what kind of thing should i be asking for. Before someone comes back with a rod and reel i know that much but when i comes to test curve, length and that type of thing i don't go angling much and i've never fished for carp.

Maybe i should asking if you was going to buy a budget setup for carp fishing for a friend that had never been carp fishing before what would you buy.

Tell him/her your budget. You do not have to have two rods and two reels to start with, start off with one, then that keeps the cost down a lot. I have caught most of my carp in the last 6 weeks on a float in the margins. I think I have had only about 7 or 8 on the ledger. A test curve of 2.5 will do. If you are going to spend some wedge at the shop I am sure that the tackle dealer will be MORE than helpful in finding what suits you.

Don't get hung up on test curves and Carp rods, there are plenty of excellent feeder rods (and others types) as well with a nice soft action that will will be suitable.

As Neal says have a chat down the tackle shop and

see what they have to say. If they aren't very helpful then its the Internet or whatever but at least you tried.

All the best.

Roger.

best thing would be to tell them where you intend to fish for the carp, that way they will know what gear would best suit the water..such as a snaggy water would need stronger gear than an open water, probably be able to tell you of going methods, swims etc if the water is local to them

a good tackle shop is a goldmine of info
