Starter kits

Recommended Posts

i was wondering if the starter kit in Aros is any good I've never been carp fishing before and most if my fishing has been done on river with a float i've recently discovered that there a small lake nearby with carp in it and wanted to give it ago

here's the discription of the argos kit for £40

2-piece 3.6m/12ft carp rod with abbreviated EVA handle, screw winch fitting reel and spigot joint.

Rod has 0.9kg/2lb test curve, a progressive action giving the rod greater casting power and excellent fish playing qualities.

1000X ambidextrous fixed spool carp reel with long cast spool, internal bail trip, rear drag, silent anti-reverse and push- button spool loaded with 200m of 3.6kg/8lb line.

Spare spool loaded with 200m of 4.5kg/10lb line.

Bag of boilies, stringer needle, polystyrene pop ups, PVA string, 2 hair rigs, hair rig stops, carp controller float, method feeder, swivels, 2 leger bombs, leger stops, 10 barbless carp hooks and disgorger.

Let me know what you think

i don't go fishing that often and don't want to spend loads so this seems ideal if it's any good

Avoid starter kits like the plague. They are nearly all dreadful, and a complete waste of money. Any set-up for £40 will probably fall to bits on your first outing. Instead, go to a good tackle shop and tell them your budget. Many tackle shops carry second-hand items that will be of far superior quality. I'm afraid you will still be spending in the region of £150...unless anyone knows better of course.

why not try for them with what you have, carp can be caught with float set ups, if you enjoy it then go out to buy the more specialist gear, if you dont then you've saved yourself £40 :)

i agree with peter, i haven't seen the argos gear but starter kits are normally a waste of money...if money is tight then hunt around for s/hand.....plenty of good bargains around

Sorry to disagree, but the Argos STARTER kits are very good value. Forget the boilies etc, the rods and reels will not fall apart and will/ can land you lots of fish.

Of course you will not get pukka carbon/kevlar, (wonder how we ever managed with cane?) the reels will not have ball races (neither did Mitchells) but rest assured it is not rubbish.

As far as I can see your only problem will be the attitude of other "superior" anglers.

Buy the gear and learn how to catch fish.

Have fun,

Wtnbok, if I may be so familiar:) ,if you had lived close enough to collect it, I would have let you have my old Daiwa 2.25tc Pro-Carbon Carp for a tenner. Surely there must be somebody who can help him out?
