Help, Newt, re fire protection in USA

Vagabond

Recommended Posts

Have just been sent a videoclip of my 10 month Texan grand-daughter crawling about in front of an open fire.

Went on the phone immediately - "Why haven't you got the fireguard up?"

"We haven't got one"

"Doh! Keep her on a short rein till I get one delivered to you"

Tried to order one on-line from Home-depot for delivery to their home in Austin, Texas.

A search under fireguard, fire screen, fire safety etc drew blank.

Not only does Home-depot not recognise the word "fireguard", its webpage shows a toddler in a nightdress standing in front of an unguarded blazing log fire.

I can't believe the USA puts its kids at risk like that.

Newt - anyone

1.What do Americans call a stout wire cage that people put in front of their fires to box it in and stop their kids getting cinderized?

2.Any ideas as to the best on-line store in the State of Texas that would deliver one PDQ ?

Thanks folks.

We would refer to them as a screen Vagabond.

Here's a link

Fire screens

There should be a few more just search for fire screens.

Amazon.com where the link originated should have it there PDQ. I get deliveries in about a week and that is here in the UK.

Thanks Jeff S, but those are similar to what we found under fire screen - Merely ornamental screens - they wouldn't keep a toddler away from the fire.

What we use in the UK are oblong mesh boxes that totally exclude the fire from access from the room, and which anchor to the wall on either side of the fire.

I did see a nice big semi circular one on the HD site & now I can't find it!

I know the ones you mean Vags - like a small tiger cage!

Yep, and toddlers are just as good as tigers at escaping!

If all else fails, we will buy one here and take it out with us on our next trip (coming soon)

I looked at some pictures of the UK design. I don't see how a device fitting that description would allow you to add wood to the fire.

The only screens I'm familiar with are designed more to keep embers in the fireplace rather than popping out into the room than to keep folks out of the fire.

Here are some possible items from a Texas company.

Newt:

It has toddler-proof clips which you undo in order to tend and mend your fire. We have had these type of fireguards in the UK since WWII.

Apart from abolishing open fires and installing central heating, they can't be beaten for safety.
