Crossman rabbitstopper, decent scope, extra pointy pellets.

Seriously though, for a patch like this a piece of fine chicken wire pinned down over the area should deter cats as well as anything. Cats hate walking on wire and will try and avoid it if possible. Obviously being a mesh, your grass will grow through it (probably not until March though now!!).

I have an Argos cat scare for my pond. It works fine for the older cats BUT one kitten which has visited our garden since it was about 12 weeks old I think has got used to the noise, and it doesn't seem to bother him.

Get a clear, glass bottle - wine bottle should do. Half-fill with water, cap it and lay it on the lawn. It's a very old remedy which seems to work for a while (apparantly the refraction of light through water/glass freaks them) though I found that after a while their efficacy declined.

Alternatively, find a small plastic container with a snap-lid. Make holes in lid. Put a good drop of household ammonia in container and site same on the problem patch. Cats will steer clear but, again, the efficacy declines as the ammonia ages so change contents every couple of days.

Break the cat's habit and it'll solve the problem.
