First overnight session

Recommended Posts

I'll be doing my first overnight session Friday night. I guess what I will do is feeder fish during the afternoon and evening and bait up an area ready to chuck a carp rod into during the night.

I have a Wychwood day shelter and a cover that goes over the top to make it a bivvy of sorts but I just wondered if anyone here has any helpful tips or advice on what to take with me, how to fish, what to do, etc?

Cheers.

its rarely dark enough not to be able to see but only take a small AA torch ,no need for 3 million candle power on the bank .

jungle formulae is no1 on the list for me.

then its a case of settling down and dozing off :D

Believe NOTHING anyones says or writes unless you witness it yourself and even then your eyes can deceive you

None of this "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" crap it just means i have at least two enemies!

There is only one opinion i listen to ,its mine and its ALWAYS right even when its wrong

Its far easier to curse the darkness than light one candle

It's just a case of being organised. On the fishing side of things, you need to be able to cast back to your baited spot after a fish, so mark your line with a bit electrical tape or pole elastic to get the distance, and line your cast up with a feature on the far bank (a tall tree, a dip in a tree line, etc.). Just in case I can't see that in the dark, I always use single banksticks and point my rod right at the spot.

Take a torch/headtorch, but only use it if you need to.

Will you be taking cooking gear? Are there facilities like toilets or are you right in the wilds?

On the camping side, take warm clothes, especially socks and a wooly hat - it can get cold even in summer. Before it gets dark, lay out everything you may need and keep it tidy. Keep a clear 'runway' from bivvy to rods, and leave the net somewhere you can use it easily! Don't zip yourself right up either, use a sleeping bag unzipped like a blanket so you can quickly get to your rods, and shoes at the entrance to the bivvy so you can step into them and go.

Even if you don't catch at night, you'll be there and ready at dawn which is brilliant. I set my phone alarm for just before dawn (very early this time of year!) so I can see if anything's moving/feeding, and recast/rebait if necessary.

Let us know how you get on.

Great advice everyone, thank you. Especially about the bog roll!

And in an emergency the soft leaves of Mullein are just the job....................

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

Don't forget that fishing at night doesn't need to be so boring you fall asleep. Carp fishing is so boring I fall asleep even during the daytime! Try float fishing at night, that's great fun. Mount a mini-starlight onto any suitable waggler with a bit of silicone tubing and you are away.

And, if you cannot wait to get to a proper toilet, please take something to dig a little hole and bury your cr*p.

Pete

Or something to dig a big hole and you can bury even more c*rp.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John
