If i won the the lottery i wouldn't have my own lake, I would just get a camper van and spend all summer traveling around fishing where ever took my fancy. Come winter i would travel the rest of the world fishing.

 

Has that Vagabond won the lottery? :)

Like most people I would have no rules and friends and associates only. Although I might reserve a swim for me only, with ornate carved wooden chair or maybe a throne with draps over it. A little log cabin behind the swim with beer & bait fridge, built in cooker & BBQ thingy, 4 poster bed, wine cellar. I would also need a small stool at the bottom of my throne for my full time ghillie to use, nothing to big for him, with a short stool he will be sitting at the correct height to wipe any mud that may get on my boots.

 

As for stock, I think I would go as exotic as I could, sod rules on moving fish or whether they mix. So Zander, Wells Catfish, Ide, Bass, Sturgeon, Bull Head Catfish.

 

Might even stock Grayling and Barbel in the lake to annoy river purists.

 

I would aslo include Carp, Tench & Perch as I enjoy fishing for them. I would also need to stock roach and maybe trout to feed my predator style lake.

 

I think I could be happy experimenting with different species in my lake to see what were hardy, any that died would soon go back in the food chain with all the predators I stocked.

 

I would be lord of all I survey or a tit on box next to a large muddy puddle :D

My ideal would be a spring fed lake around 5 acres with a good mix of features - an area of deep (up to 15') water with some pegs having 10' under the rod tip, several small islands between 30 and 80 yards from the bank, areas of shallower water (3-5'), reed lined banks (50%) with some trees overhanging the water and a good number of lily pads.

 

Stocking would be low density mixed - Tench, Crucians, Orfe, Roach, Rudd, Bream, Perch, Pike, Gudgeon and a very few large carp including some grass carp.

 

Fishing would be restricted to like minded friends, although I'd allow them to bring guests with prior approval.

 

Rules would only be used when necessary - e.g. restricting fishing from certain pegs if needed during the nesting season.

 

From others' posts it seems like most of us have similar ideas as to what constitutes the "ideal" lake.

I also put no carp.

 

I didn't mention crucians, because finding true crucians is a bit difficult today. (too much inter breeding with the rest of the mongrel crap that gets stocked).

Maybe after DNA testing I'd stock them.

What about wildies? I'd like to see some of the few remaining pure lines preserved.

 

I would stock carp, either wildies or commons, but at low density. I don't mind their presence in a traditional estate lake, which is the ambience I would be after, I just despise the way that they are stocked in excessive densities and the way they get into places they don't belong.
