Thanks, Gob'

I realise, now, that I might have been a bit too quick back then, like a moment ago, not for you but for others rather more piscatorially (or even morally) challenged.

Gotta larf, haven't ya?

Who said that?

PS - Remember: if you are going to take the pith, do so with a bit of a STYLE.

you can make floats from anything that floats ,corks easily carved and sanded to make a body ,a simple lathe is an electrick drill, quills are easily found (goose are good and easy to find around ponds)or any other large birds ones picked up ,pith as i said above was wildly used elderberry for one (never mastered it myself) i have also used drinking straws good but fragile ,biro shafts on cork make heavy weight floats and you can put a isotope in them.

plenty of reed suitable for stems are in your hobby shop etc etc ,most oldies made them its what got us through the close season byut i bet most use ready mades now ,i love crystals there just as good as quill floats were ,i have a few quills in my box but its plastic i use

I'm still searching for what I asked for!

I saw a post on the maggotdrowning forum (can't remember how I ever found out about it!) about float making stuff, I rang, got no reply for days so I posted off a large self addressed envelope and waited and waited...

By now we all know that you can turn, cut and sand Balsa, thats not what I was after, I still wonder if there is somewhere out there thats still has all the ready made float bodies to use.

You could try tapping in 'fishing float making materials' on a search engine such as Yahoo Search! Worked for me!! Might take you to Tackle Bargains plus a few other useful sites.

No, you don't need a lathe, just a sharp knife and sandpaper.

Other than quills I haven't made a float in years. I just retrieve those that others loose!

I can tell this post is going where you don't want it but I'll say it any ways. I have never found a place (here in the US) that had ready made bodies. I turn all of my floats and I found a goos source to for stems. I use chop sticks (bamboo) cut in half with a hole drilled down the middle and a skewer for a peg for someof my stick floats. I also use bamboo skewers for the stems of my avon and chubber floats. Hope this helps ya.
