In the wild animals have ways of getting rid of parasites, knowingly or otherwise. In the Autumn I have found fox droppings full of roundworms and wild plum stones, for example.

A heavy worm burden will definitely inhibit growth and may be the reason it is so small.

I know you are a believer in natural balances but I would get in touch with St Tiggywinkles and ask their advice on it, as you have taken it out of it's natural environment, albeit with the very best of intentions.

I would be very interested in their response!

These and other sites have plenty of advice on caring for 'Autumn orphans' but none mention de-fleaing or de-worming.

Strange that!

Farming folk consider erradication of parasites to be cheaper than buying extra feed.

I got as far as the bit about treating a fox with mange and decided that was enough!

This is a copy of the reply I had from St Tiggywinkles.

We do treat all autumn hedgehogs for lungworm, which is a major problem in

hedgehogs particularly at this time of year. To irradicate lungworm

requires an intense medical regime and if the keeper of the hedgehog or his

vet would like to contact us we can send them a copy of the regime.

If you have any further queries regarding hedgehog care please do not

hesitate to contact us.

embarassing tale :

staying away working on church near lechlade,

bit worse for wear on returning to campsite from pub, on my own,

i discover very large hedgehog in darkness,

bent down & tickled its chin for a while, it seemed to like this so i decided to tickle its tummy.

it seemed to like this too for about a minute when it decided to curl up & dig its spines into my wrist, completly traping my fist.

so there i was, drunk, in a field, late at night with a hedgehog stuck on my mitt.

i was glad the lads had gone home that night,

it took about 15 minutes for mr hedgehog to relax & free me.

i wont be tempted if i ever find an armadillo :o

if you stick them in water theyl unwrap in a split second :D ,

i think gapes in fowl are found in the windpipe (hence the bird trying to gape to shift them) and are small red worms (been a few years now since i kept chickens)
