I see there is a nice double page story in this weeks AM on Vagabond (Dave) catching a Bitterling, which takes him to 100 UK species.

Well done Dave. :1a::clap::thumbs:

I had to look at the birthdays after reading the thread title! :o

I thought that seeing as Budgies 69, Dave might have got the telegram from the Queen.;)

I might just have to buy this weeks issue to have a look. There will be at least one thing worth reading.

Nice one Dave.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

I don't often buy the AM and having just flicked through the rest of it that's not going to change soon. Mostly rubbish about big fish, alive and dead ones.

Are they still on about the late Ms Benson RIP?

I might just read it in the queue at the supermarket then. :D

100 UK Species is quiet some achievement, and makes more interesting reading in AM then Bl**** Benson.

But if no-one provides them with different material.......

I must say the two guys at AM I have dealt with are pretty well clued up on angling as a whole, and their reports on material I have provided were (unlike the Nationals) very accurate.

My take is that they are crying out for more variety, but if everyone goes carp or barbel fishing........

...and before anyone asks, I have not received, asked for, nor expected any sort of remuneration.

That's excellent. I'd have to have a long hard think to put together a species list but I know it isn't 100!!

Well done Dave that certanley is some achievment, im wondering now you mention AM needing more variety is that why weve had three weeks of sea fishing tips using coarse gear?? or are the boys just on a seaside jolly

Like you say Dave the guys you dealt with were clued up on angling as a whole. So why is there so little about normal sized coarse fish in these mags (not just AM)? Seems to me if it isn't carp, barbel or specimen sized no one is interested any more.

Out of interest Dave, of that 100 how many are from freshwater?

Well, I can't answer for AM's editorial policy - all I can say is, that since they became aware of my species hunting activities, they have done three double-page features on it. That , to me , suggests that the desire to expand beyond the carp/barbel horizons is there.

I just hope that a few more people get interested in species-hunting as a result.

But I can't single-handedly change the content of AM. Its up to the rest of you out there to provide them with more interesting copy.

There are plenty more branches of angling that might generate an interesting article or two.

Fly-fishing for coarse fish

Catching a roach over a pound from as many different rivers as possible.

Matches with carp and bream barred.

Species-hunt matches

Etc, etc

Part of the charm of species hunting is that each new fish (apart from accidental captures) requires thinking about, planning, locating, avoiding commoner species etc - its like starting fishing anew.

Groans,

Pulls up fish lists from computer,

Starts counting.

.

.

.

.

..

Freshwater 44 UK species

Saltwater 63 UK species

"Aha!" says an on-the-ball mathematician, "Caught you out!"

Not so - seven species - bass, flounder, seatrout, eel, thicks and thins (mullet) and pollack appear on both lists, as I have caught them in both freshwater and salt.
