Newt, the European champs were held in Hungary!

You are looking at one of the Nationals.

These are massive matches, there are three national leagues for match anglers.

ANY NFA registered team can enter the nationals but start at the bottom in div three (dont know how they have to qualify).

A certain amount of teams get promoted and demoted from each league each year.

Division one is dominated by the likes of Maver Barnsley Black, Van Den Eye Essex (the team Bob Nudd fishes for at club level) and Daiwa Dorking (the team will Raison fishes for).

These teams attract the best match anglers around through big sponsership deals and the fact that they win alot! They usually have very big squads with two or three teams in the nationals.

It is not unusual for them to have teams in three or for matches a weekend and to have individuals or pairs fishing other matches/venues to gather info for the whole team.

They also have networks of ex team members etc around the country to gather info, watch the form of venues as the big matches are held at different venues each year. This gives the local teams a chance against the big teams and they usually do very well.

In recent years match fishing has taken off big style in the UK.

There is a competion called fish on mania.

Hundreds enter the competion in qualifiying events, the winner of each event goes to the final. The final only pays out money to the winner.

It is a nice amount of GBP25000.00

Not bad for a good days angling.

the whole final is televised on SKY sports.

BUT alot of the anglers want to win the event due to the prestige attached not for the money.

alot of the anglers now enter every qualifier to give them a chance at the final.

What it needs is for every angler to write/e-mail AT & AM congratulating the team and shame them into doing a bit of reporting!!

Maybe Fishing is to specialist for the British Press,However iam sure it would have been all over the front and back pages if France had won,so as far as iam concerned it is the Press that are to blame.I would guarantee headlines if someone had of been Killed, raped or cheated. :D:D:D

Fishing seems to be my favorite form of loafing.

"Even a bad day of fishing is better than a good day of work."

I know the joy of fishes in the river through my own joy, as I go walking along the same river.

What do you think if the float does not dip, try again I think.

No, they prefer to report on how bad we have done at other sports like football or tennis or do boring reports on golf, snooker or horse racing.

The problem is that they see angling as a hobby/pasttime rather than a sport.

I dont think the media really know how much time, effort or money is spent on the competative side of angling or how much knowledge and skill it takes to win a local/club match let alone the open circuit or international level!

I see the BBC follow darts, snooker, curling etc, all much less a 'sport' than angling. But of course we actualy win at angling so don't expect much coverage when they can knock Henman & the 'nancy' footie teams etc. I used to hang glide and once again the coverage was minimal despite euro & world champs being brits. Same story for most watersports (which we won more medals in at last games than track!) & our poor shooters never get a mention. When was the last time you saw an angling program on the beeb or ITV?
