starting from scratch

Hi, im new to this site and new to fishing.

Great forum, have read all post and have learnt some good stuff.

A few week ago the father in law retired so as a treat we found a caravan site with a nice looking fishing lake and booked in for 3 day.

On the first day he was fishing with my 2 sons and I was sat with them sorting out my youngest lads tangles and helping him as much as I could.

Thinking that this was not too bad I thought I would not mind a go myself, wife was off into the village so I asked her to get me a licence.

An hour latter I was sat drowning maggots with gear borrowed off the father in

Law.

I was hooked, after getting home I have bought a cheap set of gear off ebay and from argos and have been fishing with the kids on the witham (stamp end, Lincoln) we have been catching a few fish but I need to learn more, so can anyone point me to any web site or books to read.

I don’t even know what the fish are that I catch.

So any advice, help or tips would be a big help.

Many thanks Jeff

Welcome to Anglers Net Jeff, aand welcome to the world of fishing too!

I'll be honest and say I dont think you could have come to a better place for information, advive, help, and friendship. This you will find out over the ensueing weeks.

I would advise anglers new to fishing to buy a little pocket book called "The observers guide to Coarse Fishing" because it covers the real basics, and also because it is small enough to go fishing with you as a bankside reference for knots, rigs and fish identification. I'm not sure if its still in print or not, but that would be my best advice.

Of course now you have found us here, you have a wealth of knowledge and advice directly at your fingertips, so the moment you have a question or a problem just type it out here and it will be solved for you with dicussion, the best part is that you will get many points of view, thats why this place is better than any book.

Hi Jeff and Rustam, welcome to our humble abode.

Ask all you like, but watch out for Chesters1 (he bites!)

TV angler john Wilson has some basic info on the net, I'm not clever enough to post a link, but I expect someone will. Failing that, look for topics posted by Leedsunited, I'm sure someone posted a link in reply to a post from him regarding float fishing on moving water.

This is as good a starting point as any old novice.

Just as an aside we are based in Louth not far from you. We do not have retail premises (we trade online only), but it's worth bearing in mind if you are after gear.

I was up in Lincoln near the guillitine lock near Starglaze (don't know that area that well), lads seemed to be having some good fishing there though!

old novice - the picture doesn't want to display for some reason. If you upload it to http://www.go-fishing.org/upload/ we can see it.
