Don't waste it on fishing mate! Marinade it overnight in white wine, roll in seasoned flour chuck into a hot pan with some butter sizzling away, brown it, remove from pan and put to one sida, add onions, mushrooms and some tomato (fresh or tinned) and the wine that you marinaded it in to the still sizzling pan, season and reduce. Chuck the squirrel chunks back in and pop it into the oven for an hour or thereabouts and serve with vegetables of your choice.Or you can chuck it in some nice shortcrust pastry after it's been in the oven for about 45 minutes and stick it back in the oven for 20 minutes for a lovely pie! (the same recipe works a treat for bunnies but no need to marinade overnight) :D

Thinking about it that recipe with a few minor alterations would probably be suitable for catfish as well :P

AN is great, not only do you get good fishing tips, you also get top culinary advice. I wonder if I registered on a Foodie website would I get good angling advice?

But imagine the outcry if people starting seeing grey squirrels being shot out of trees and trapped all over the country!

Dunno about that - a few townies maybe might squawk, but country folk around here still call grey squirrels "tree rats"

In the 1950s there was a government bounty of one shilling per grey squirrel tail. (a shilling at that time would buy three loaves of bread or a pint of good ale).

I had just left school and earned £2.10s (fifty shillings) per week - most winter weekends two days shooting with a .22 air rifle would almost double my weekly income. There was an "agent" in the village who would give you a pound for 21 grey squirrel tails, the extra tail being his commission when he redeemed the week's bag.

However, the population dymanics of most of the alien species in this country are too complex to be influenced by attempts at culling. So prolific were the squirrels in the Wealden woodlands that our culling seemed to make not the slightest difference. I can't remember when the bounty ceased, but it provided me with a bit of extra cash at a time when I needed it.

Yes lovely, brings back memories....

Unfortunately there is a downside - the hassle of skinning and butchering squirrels - for not very much meat. Something I did when young and energetic, but am too lazy to do now! I know a guy who culls deer..... rather more effort-effective.

But you are right - they are delicious. Now if there is volunteer squirrel trimmer out there............
