The logic behind close seasons on stillwaters?

A quote by Keith Arthur on the Fish O (match fishing) thread currently running on the AT forum

Every 'silver fish only' pool has died on its jacksie because you actually need the carp to provide the silvers with rest during the summer, plus loads of food; ie partly digested carp crap! The people that keep lakes running are carp anglers; whether those with 3 rods and bivvies sitting catching 8lbers on kit that I'd use for sailfish and tarpon, or Mr Soap with his feeder or waggler rod - pole even. He doesn't want roach or bream, mostly because he doesn't have the skill to catch them. If he did, he'd be fishing for free in a river!!

I take that to mean that after the silvers have spawned they're knackered and angling pressure wil cause them damage or they don't provide enough sport (more likely). I thought that the reason for not having a close season was because the fish didn't spawn (I didn't believe that anyway) in stocked pools!

It is also rather derogatory to those pool anglers who keep the angling trade going...............and of course those that demand otter "management".

Are rivers free fishing now then?

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

I can't see why it takes more skill to catch roach and bream on still waters than to catch carp?? I regularly fish on the pole or waggler, and catch lots of all 3 species. I also catch roach & bream on rivers, for free and on day tickets.

I think the logic behind closed season on still waters is to do with spawning. Most of the ones in my area don't bother to close at all any more, as the spawning times vary so much from water to water, and are fairly short!

I agree that it's a good idea to have a fair variety of species though.

Hmmm

Mr Arthur certainly does seem to have a very poor opinion of the people who pay his wages and make him a "celebrity"

Let's agree to respect each others views, no matter how wrong yours may be.

Ive never been able to work out why he is an angling "celebrity". For me he's just someone who made his money by having a big gob and a lot of what he comes out with just seems to me to be aimed at keeping himself in the limelight.

Sadly people making money seems to be the reason for a lot of things in angling these days.

I totally agree. Who exactly is Keith Arthur? (serious question). I'm of the same opinion as Lutra from what I've read about him.....or rather what he's said and has been published on the internet. Be gentle with me I don't match fish or read the comics!
