  1. Not sure I actually believe most of these stories; certainly not to the extent that the Daily Mail chooses to believe it. Also, many of the idiot readers who resonded to the article are immigrants themselves (i.e ex-pats). I particularly liked this one: "A lot of these people who perpetrate this crime would love to go to jail - if they are sleeping rough, then a warm bed and 3 squares, is a good thing. Seriously though, killing Swans and fishing in illegal methods should carry a prison sentence - in their own country, we catch 'em, we send 'em back why should we put them in our jails -they have perfectly good ones there" Thanks very much for that Dr Goebbels!
  2. I have fished that stretch of river, and it has always been one of the free river fishing spots of Norfolk, as long as I can remember. I know that the folks who run the pub at Ringland are buying up fishing venues (they just aquired the Bridge Pub at Lenwade, and are in the process of extending it to add the three lakes behind it). They may have expressed a desire to lease that section? I can't see any other reason why the council would stop people fishing there (except for giving in to NIMBY's). As far as it goes, I would (will) continue to do it untill someone actually tells me to stop.
  3. I find it ok to use a feeder and a pole, or waggler, together during winter. But to be honest, I usualy go down to one or the other by early-mid April. Once the beasties start to feed properly, I can't concentrate on both. On a commercial, you should catch well enough by then to keep you happy on one rod/pole. Also, it gives you a chance to concentrate on developing your skills & techniques on each method.
  4. Hi all, I just bought a Beasmaster 850B margin pole (the black & yellow one). It is rated as a strong pole (20 elastic), but when I went to elasticate it, I noticed that the top 2 kit is very long and bendy. I am surprised, because I was expecting it to be more rigid? I put a 15 hollow elastic on it in the end, but had been hoping to go higher. Does anyone here have one of these poles? And could you advise me about strength of top kit? The top kit is a long top 2 section, and I cut about 3 inches off it before elasticating. Maybe I need to cut it right back, but not really sure Thanks
  5. I would second that about the scales Nice Pike there though PG1. I remember catching my first one; very exciting!
  6. I need a bug that goes out to work so that I can go fishing every day! Knotweed is a right pest, I have it in my garden, and have found that industrial strenght 'Roundup' pretty much did the job on it. It helps if you know a farmer...they will have some
  7. Mine's fairly modest having only returned to fishing recently: 20lb + Carp 20lb + Pike Just won my first club match last Sunday, so that's one dream achieved
  8. Hmmm....Ladies....what about: The Daiwa Tea Cake The Shimano Lavender Draw Liner The Shakespeare Ironing Board or The Wychwood Pop Sock, perhaps?
  9. One way is to make some bread mash and drop it in about 10ft below where you are going to fish from, then trot a float down past the mash, with flake on the hook. The best way to not spook the chub is to stay as far back from the bank as you can, whilst still being able to watach the float; as you have no features, it will be hard to hide behind anything.
  10. Great! The fishings always better when there's a little colour in the water
  11. I just bought a pair of Mitchell 30 FR baitrunners from Bosfish for £20.99 each. Not too heavy duty, and nice reels for the price.
  12. I agree, I've not seen anything of that size in 3 pieces. Wychwood do a nice one rated up to 140g, but it's a 1 piece 6ft rod, I think. Why do you need it to break down so small, if you don't mind me asking?
  13. Hiya. I would try bread punch or maybe flaked bread. You can liquidise some bread (dry) and put it in a feeder if you are using one, so it works as an attractant. If you are float fishing, you can put a ball of mushed up bread in and fish slightly down from it, with bread on the hook. Worth a try, and It's cheap too!
  14. To be honest 8" Roach aren't that small, as far as Roach go. To answer your question, it depends what you are after. Do you mean that you want to catch bigger Roach? Were you on a lake? If so, how far out are you fishing? often you need to get further out into the lake to catch the bigger Roach. Small ones work in shoals, but the bigger ones tend to lurk in smaller groups. Try using a weighted maggot feeder at distance. Remember that a 2lb+ Roach is considered an impressive catch. If you are on a river, just try trotting a stick float down, and chuck in 20 or so maggots every time you cast in!
  15. I live in Norfolk & pay around £2.50/Pint.
  16. I can't see why it takes more skill to catch roach and bream on still waters than to catch carp?? I regularly fish on the pole or waggler, and catch lots of all 3 species. I also catch roach & bream on rivers, for free and on day tickets. I think the logic behind closed season on still waters is to do with spawning. Most of the ones in my area don't bother to close at all any more, as the spawning times vary so much from water to water, and are fairly short! I agree that it's a good idea to have a fair variety of species though.
  17. If there was a species I had to live without, I would reluctantly go for the slimy Bream. Not that I have anything against the poor buggers, it's just the inconvenience of cleaning the slime off of my kit. Then again, If I was going on which fish I find most incinvenient to me, it would have to be Barbel. Living almost next to the river Wensum, my Chubbing is ruined every summer by hordes of Barbel fanatics, competing to see who will pull the next UK record fish from the river. Since we said just one species, I'll go for Barbel
  18. Hi jonnyp, I use the Preston 15gram method mould quite a lot. I find them good to use, provided that you get the consistency of the groundbait right (although that would apply without one too i suppose), I use a 4" hook length, and tuck the hookbait in, so that it just hangs out of the end of the mould, then just press it down. The result is a very streamlined feeder, and therefore less chance of the groundbait disintegrating as it hits the water. I caught 15 carp on a local commercial last Sunday using it, all between 3 - 6lb, a guy 2 swins down on a pole caught 3. So it worked for me that day They are very reasonably priced, so definately worth a try. Hope that helps. YH
  19. Hi, I'm YosserHughes! I had a look around and really like the look of the forum; congrats on your good work. I have a few hobbies but to be honest, fishing eclipses most of them. I returned to the sport 4 years ago, after about 20 years absence, and, boy, have things changed! Mainly for the better I should add. Am looking forward to participating in the forums, and picking up/sharing some top tips. Cheers, YH
