How much gear to take

Just had another thought, I forgot the amount of extra kit we bring these days for fish safety that I never used to have when I fished as a kid.

Care for our catch's is much better these days and I often bring 2 landing nets with me when fishing. One standard one for my general fishing, plus a large Carp net just in case I catch a monster. Add to this the unhooking mats, Carp care kit, weighing sling and things start to snow ball :D

That is a very good point about the fish care too often I see people not using a landing net to land

big fish, but the thing that makes me mad is on a hot day keeping fish in the keep net in water

that is too shallow for too long

Yeah your right about the keep nets, I don't see any reason for a pleasure angler to use one. Fine if you want to hold the fish for a few minutes while you get sorted for a photo, but what use is it to any one to hold fish for a few hours. Oh I forgot so they can be hauled up the bank to be crushed under their own weight while some one gets a photo with a pile of dying fish :(

I wonder as they are being crushed, do they think pick me, pick me. In those photos of bulging keep nets their is all ways one lucky fish that ends up being held up for the photo and so at least escapes being crushed with its brethren.

Another good point about the hot weather, it's another thing I missed from the list. A spare bucket or bait box to wet the unhooking mat and fish while sorting out unhooking or weighing etc.

Stephen

Friday last, I came across an angler with a large wheelbarrow piled with gear, to a height where he couldn't see over the top.

He had about eight carp-type rods ready made up and lashed to the top of the barrow (presumably spod rod, marker float rod, four rods to fish with, and a couple of spares) Plus buckets, nets, bivvy, seats. luggage etc

"Here for the weekend?" I asked

"Nope, just overnighting" he replied.

Had a sense of humour, tho' as he added "I tend to travel heavy" :):)
