Recommendations for a decent Barbel rod

Having been out of the sport for such a long time...and how things have changed over the years I am looking for opinions on Barbel rods....My original Barbel rod I had made up for fishing the Wye,Teme and Severn at the time I wanted something with a sensitive tip but a rod with the beef to handle the job.

Now I am wanting something of quality but don't have a bottomless pocket

Damn - beat me too it!! I've also got 'one' of the above rods - great bit of kit and with two tips covers just about every eventuality!

Another vote for the Greys rods. I have a pair of Prodigy Specimen rods which come with 1.5 & 2lb tc tops and great throw actions for playing barbel on.

No bids on this one yet and it will be up soon.

This is a sad ol'Toad tackle tart...hehehe

I have some barbel rods

Wychwood Rogue Barbel 12' 1.5lb

Wychwood Rogue Barbel 12' 1.75lb

Drennan specialist power barbel rods 12' 1.5lb

Drennan specialist power barbel rods 12' 1.75lb

Drennan specialist power barbel rods 12' 2lb

J W Youngs Specialist Barbel Rod 12 ' 2lb

J W Youngs Ray Walton Barbel Rod 11' 1.6lb

Daiwa Infinity Advanced Barbel Rod 11' 1.75lb

Daiwa Infinity Advanced Barbel Rod 11' 2.25lb

Not counting Rods I have made myself or had built.

I like and often use the Wychwood frequently chasing Chub with it

Overall I guess the Daiwa Infinity Advanced 2.25lb is the rod I most grab when going off Barbel hunting.

I have not used the Grey's prodigy barbel 1.5lb tc rod but have heard many others praising the Drennan rods I for one cannot fault them in the pounding I have given them.

The Wychwood is a bit flexible for many but a forgiving rod when matched to the right line for a novice, however if you are going to chase Barbel guess you better spend a few extra pounds and get something slightly stronger and less flexible than the Wychwood.

I have heard of the mid price range Daiwa rods shattering in their middle section so read everyone's advice very carefully

your just spoilt

Just to chuck yet another name into the hat... Korum Neoteric. Two top sections, 1.75 lb and 2.2 lb, 'normal' tops not quivers. The choice of tips give you cover for a few different situations, and differences in weight being cast. Other nice little touches, like matt finish, so no glare off the rod, and folding keeper ring.

Anecdotal recommendation...

Two seasons back my lad decided he wanted to take up fishing. He bought a load of gear, on my recommendation, including a pair of Neoterics. I took him out one Sunday evening and showed him how i fish for barbel. He went back the next day, on his own, and pulled out a fish of 11 lb 10 oz. Promptly decided that he'd 'done' fishing, and stopped going. I bought the Neoterics off of him in a flash, and love 'em.

The other bonus is they are great as 'all round' specimen rods. Use 'em for all your tench and bream work, and to a certain extent your carping as well.

Hi Kev, welcome back to the mad house that is Barbel fishing. Just a couple of points if I may. You say you had a rod made up, have you got the specs on it?

All I can add is the rods I really want I cannot justify the cost, so I make do with the Wychwoods, and the Shimanos, the Shimano are a lighter blank and the Wychwoods have more back bone but a bit crude, but strong.

Dont fish with the quiver anymore, apart from upstreaming so I can see better the drop backs. After all you aint gonna miss a 2 foot twitch I suppose.

More important than T.C is the ACTION, I want a progressive action, not ideal for all occasions but fine for most.

In a nutshell mate the Wychwoods are fine.

The money you save can get you a good reel, but that's another story, is it?

Hi and thanks...the old rod I had was made up by Roy and Pete at Hattons fishing tackle Hereford and was modified at least 3 times....as for where is ended as far as construction in concerned I can not remeber.. Looking around at some of the suggested rods put in this thread what is plain to see is that rod developement has come on leaps and bounds over the past 15 years.

Maybe I worded my first post wrong about now wanting to break the bank.... £150 is'nt really going to do that I-M-O but you know how it goes on these forums ask a question and you get the right hights being suggested...

As for reel? watch this space as that is going to be qustion 2 :D

Thanks.......I did look at these from the off....its just the lack of the quiver tip additions that made me shy away...... I do see your point in having something that can be used as a specimen rod also

I really love my wychwoods and I have to admit they are often the first I reach for, I just love the look and the feel of them and especially the lighter t.c. for some fun Chubbing, although I think I will go and have a look at these Greys rods everyone is raving about.
