Strange idea

Right i know this may sound very odd but i suddenly had an idea, if you were fishing fairly close in the margins on the float, and you got a big 2-litre coke bottle, emptied it and cleaned it out, , cut it in half, , drilled a small hole in the bottom and put in say half a pint of maggots, and somehow put a stick in it or hung it on an overhanging branch and either pre-baited a swim that way or just had it like that whilst you were fishing for the day would that work.

Do you get what im saying?? Haha i know it sounds weird but i just thought it would be a good way to keep maggots falling in to your swim regularly without overfeeding it, maybe get the fish on the drop, anybody tried anything like this?

Cheers

There's very little in fishing which is really new dave, that includes your idea. :)

Yes it's been done before.

Hi mate,

Haven't tried it but I've heard a similar idea for boat fishing for mullet. Apparently if you put some holes in an old paint tin, fill it with maggots and hang it off the side of the boat the tide will take a steady stream of maggots down, which you can then fish a float rig in. Don't see why it wouldn't work in the margins of a stillwater, good luck with it!

Seem to remember Dick Walker hanging carcasses in a tree to let the maggots drop into a river swim. A sheep would last a week or two

Yes he used to do that - farmers used to let him know if they had a spare dead sheep

Once when Fred J Taylor was Dick's guest Fred suggested they cut the sheep in half and thus bait two swims. Anyone who knew Dick could have predicted his answer

"Good idea Fred, here's the hatchet"

....a catch phrase to this day.

In the 1940s my uncle and I used to hang long-dead chickens over the Upper Bure. Absolutely deadly.

Did that when I was younger. Hung the bottle from a bridge over the River Bure too (Mayton bridge near the the tip between buxton and horstead) and fished downstream from it. Worked a treat until the knot came undone... :wallbash:

Epic Fail!
