It's odd, I have no qualms about live baits and happy to rig up big Bonito and Tuna that do react to being used. But a dead Skimmer or Perch :D

I never knew they sold perch and bream dead-baits in shops? I want to say there is something wrong with that but i cant actually think of a reason why it should be so i'll keep quiet!

I dont fish for pike and dont use deads or livebaits for perch either, i expect one day i will try for pike and at that point i will have no problem using a small roach or minnow as live or deadbait but i dont think i could put anything else on!

Funny how peoples morals/opinions differ in these things. I have no problem with people using dead or livebaits but i just dont know if i could put a half a pound live perch on my hook and feel right about it. I know that it is wrong i feel like that about a perch but not about a minnow but its just my opinion

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."

My favorite technique i just luurve it when that pike floats dissapears as for a few seconds you don`t know if its 2lb or 20 ,have no qualms or soul searching about using any fish Roach/Rudd/Bream whatever but truth be told its normally what i manage to catch rather than any preferance .

Need to get out and have a go soon so will see what the Thames looks like this weekend Steve.

We are not putting it back it is a lump now put that curry down and go and get the scales

have I told you abouit the cruise control on my Volvo ,,,,,,,bla bla bla Barder rod has it come yet?? and don`t even start me on Chris Lythe :bleh::icecream:

The whole one-species-over-another is kind of like why you would eat pigs, chickens, cows and sheep but not cats, dogs, horses etc.

I saw fresh mirror carp on the fishmonger's counter in Morrisons t'other day and have to say it kind of took me by surprise, but on reflection (no pun intended), it's no different to a trout, salmon, herring blah blah.

Then there is vermin - which species is it ok to shoot/poison? Rats - Yes. Mice - Yes. Rabbits- Yes. Squirrels? err.... Cute little birdies? umm..... Foxes? Yeah we can kill them so long as you don't tear them to bits with dogs.

If it's legal to do it, by all means do so but use your own discretion. I think you'd struggle to find a genuine "angler" that's ever put anything even nearing specimen size on a hook to catch something else.

I've eaten all you mention and a whole lot more squirrels, guinea pigs, hedgehogs, snakes, breast of crows and on and on, the French eat Horses, the Asian people eat cats and dogs, where's the problem eating something

Prevented by noisy minority action groups, probably the same people who will eventually stop you all fishing

Always fancied using goldfish but can't bring myself to do it. My local lake has catfish in it, the owner put a couple of hundred tench in it and they disappeared in about 3 weeks, still could never use a tench as live bait for them though

I will personally only use dead-baits. And they must not be U.K course fish

It feels wrong using Perch/Gudgeon/Roach ect: on trebles to me.... I have nothing against others doing that (Their choice!) But for me I stick mainly to Lures/Spinners... And occasionally dead-baits like Sprats for my rare pike expeditions.

It is of course all subjective to personal opinion, not objective :D

I wouldnt bother with any ornementals (all though small ghost carp arnt to bad) as most are very delicate and soon die.Thousands of years of inbreeding no doubt, Tench on the other hand......... possibly my favourite UK cat bait.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

They just faced off having a gurning competition, the shark lost.... :bigemo_harabe_net-163::bigemo_harabe_net-163::bigemo_harabe_net-163:

On topic, I use whatever I can catch in the vicinity, it makes sense. If there's a lot of them so that even I can catch, then it is most probably what Mrs Pike and the Pickerels are eyeing up for noms. However I only ever hook them in the lip and use for about an hour on a big single, if nowt, it gets released and replaced. I find it unnecessary to impale them in the flank. My attempt at a sporting chance I guess.
