A couple of UK questions

Read in several magazines about folks catching a "ton" of fish - always when speaking of keep nets. I doubt this means multiple thousand pound catches (or if it does, I wanna try that water) but could someone explain what it does mean.

Also, I noticed that one still water has a keep net restriction saying that you may not use them during the closed season. No species or bait or style restrictions on the pond. No "match only" restriction on keep nets. ????

hi newt

the ton is 100lb, the restrictions on keepnets during the closed season is to keep spawn bound fish healthy during the spawning season, as you know, spawning in the uk can go on months before and after the official closed season, without going into yet another debate about the closed season, with the climate changes that are happening now, a shift in the thinking behind the closed season should really be reconsidered.

Smelly nets.

Thanx Gray.

Any idea where the 100lb "ton" came from?

Hi newt, the term 'Ton' is used here on various things Linked with #'100'.

For example driving a car at 100+ m.p.h. then you might say you you did the 'Ton'.

Where it came from i don't know either ,yet .

Regards , Richard.

In my reckless youth I was a "ton-up" boy. ie I owned a motorcycle (Vincent Comet) capable of that speed. Only cissies wore helmets in those days...... That is the first time I heard the phrase. Ton rhymes with the first syllable of HUNdred. Can't stop now, going perch fishing , an my ole Volvo will only do 90.
