despite the tv progs such as bargain hunt etc there are still "goodies" to be found at car boot fairs ,i saw this reel but it was so dirty and grotty i left it ,on the second time round it was still there so i felt sorry for it and bought it for £2 .On closer inspection i realised it was wooden with brass surround and face plate as it was so covered in verdigree i went in with the brass polish (horror ) but i think the end result was worth it and it has pride of place with the centerpin collection :):) its made by carter of london ,there isnt a picture of it in phill wallers book anyone know its age?

If the 50p came with it its a real bargin! I like it cos its shinny. Im terrible with shiny or sparkley things.

Why don't anyone come up with some thing usefull about this reel.

I'm sure if Chesters wanted the P!ss taken out of his new aquistion he would have said "Let's take the p!ss out of my reel"

Hereford_Angler Why don't you help him with information, you seen to know all there is to know. Most of the threads I have read from you are utter Sh!te.

And while I'm on please refrain from suggesting people from Hereford should go fishing with me.

I've had a look through Rosewood To Revolution, and this is what I can tell you.

A. Carter & Co Ltd. London traded 1853-1969. With your reel with the single handle, I'm going to guess around lat 19th century, going by the style of reel you have. There is a picture of a "Jardine" Reel, which has "Carters" on it and looks similar, except the face plate is drilled. The "Jardine" style is where "the ordinary spindle of the drum is replaced by a number of rods which form a circle" - ie. it has a central spindle, but around it are a number of pillars which I guess strengthen the centre of the reel.

This was Patented in 1888, so if yours has this feature, this would help. Either way, your reel is gorgeous and you got a bargain.

Some people would say leave a reel in the condition you found it in - personally I think you did the right thing by cleaning it up. It looks great! Give you 50p for it... :D

go ahead take the pee :D the drum is a solid brass one made in 5 pieces (2 sides ,2 outer turned bits and a centre turning ) i should have taken a "before "picture but it would have been just a green lump :D

and for some of your benefits the 50p is 1997 you can buy the fifty p for a pound
