Hi,

Welcome to Anglers Net.

What sort of weight are you anticipating for each species?

well anywhere from a few pounds upto say 8 - 10lb i would have thought. Would it be best to try off lighter hooklinks and change if neseccerry

I buy three types of hooklength, one for light fishing (2lb to size 20 or 18), one for ledgering for perch and river fishing (4lb to size 14) and carp hooklength (5 or 6lb line to a hair rigged or baitbanded size 12).

With these three hooklengths i find i can usually fish in any situation i find myself in.

If you were wondering i tend to use these-

I cant remember which make the 4lb hooklengths are, drennan also i think. And for the carp hooklength i normally use these-

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."

Probably stating the obvious here, but your hooklength should be a lower BS than your mainline, about 2/3 to 3/4 the strength....

If I'm expecting tench and / or carp on float gear I like the Drennan Carp hooks to nylon. What I really like is that each size has two options for line strength. I carry a selection from 16's up to 8's

Match the hook size to the bait and the line strength to the size of the fish you are hoping for :)
