What a terrible thing to happen

Yes, grim.

Having recently experienced being thrown out of a capsizing boat, the scenario is only too familiar.

...but questions need to be asked.

Could the lad swim?

if so, was he too shocked by the cold water to swim ? There is also the possibility that in panic some people actually forget they can swim.

Lifejacket ? Given that the angling club forbids boats, perhaps that is a superfluous question.

Was he a member of the angling club, or on "an adventure of his own" ?

Nothing can be done for this lad except condolences for his family and friends, but everyone who fishes and/or has young relatives/friends who fish should ponder the lessons to be learned from this tragedy.

Tragic for the family involved. I'm sure there are lessons to be learned, but even with the best will in the world, boys will be boys and will always find ways to indulge in risky behaviour.

Somehow some of us get through that stage.

But we have all been there... hanging on to mates elastic belt as he tries to cast bait to pike in weir pool.

Hanging on to bridge support underneath the bridge with one hand to cast to perch underneath... in winter!!!

The worst we thought we would get is wet.

We are able to look back and laugh. Thanks God for smiling.

A club official, who asked not to be named, said club rules stated that anglers were prohibited from fishing in boats on the pond and had to use rod and lines from the banks.

I wonder if he had anything useful to add. I'm sure the boy's family will be very happy to know that after their tragedy, rules are rules and someone is still making sure everyone knows that.

I kind of think there's a time and a place for comments like that.

Its Unfortunate in this litigious society he has to make a statement like that just in case, and to make sure that people know they are not meant to use boats on the water. I still think part of them will be worried that writ may come in., that is not to take away the tragedy of this event but I bet there will be some smart arse lawyer sniffing about.,

Yes i completely agree it was cold and insensitive.

Poor lad, when i think of all the times i have been fishing either on my own in the winter when there is nobody around or doing stupid stuff like going onto precarious pontoons, slippy jettys and walking along slippy tree branches to plop my bait in just the right spot, makes you think how these things do happen.

My condolences to his family is all i say, (not that they are likely to end up on Anglers net) very, very sad :(

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."
