Home Made Controller Floats

Interesting piece in a newspaper here. It would be great if there were a couple of photos:

This bit caught my eye:

The front end of the controller is hollowed out, scooping water to act as a brake when a fish takes the bait.

I wonder if you could just use a wine cork and if it was from a good bottle would it catch more? :drunk:

Most carp would probably just ignore the bread and head for the cork!

On a serious note, I don't think cork would cast as far, though.

Yes, but it might be OK if you locked it in place with a couple of biggish split shot.

p.s. for more distance, you might just have to open another bottle and put two corks on. :)

by the time you got throug the first bottle your ability to look for bite would have severly diminished XD after the second its not classed as fishing anymore its a cheese and wine party al fresco

I've just been making this kind thing myself! Can't be doing with scooping stuff out etc too much faffing about for me! Lol!

I bought some balsa bodies for float making, on the smaller ones I've just sealed and painted them, on the larger ones I've carefully cut a slit down one side and then sealed and painted. In both cases I've cut suitable sized reed/dowl to fit through the bodies hole.

They end up acting like the old cork pike bungs, you put the line through them and trap it in place with the dowl.

It's surprising how well they will cast even with just bread flake on! If you use luncheon meat to weight them they make awesome margin fishing tackle as well!

You can also get splash wagglers with a scoop in the bottom for making a consistent plop and setting the hook.

What's up with using a plain old bubble float ? They come in different sizes and you only need to fill them with a bnit of water for distance casting or making into a self hooking gizzmo.

Bubble floats are generally pretty crude though. Fox made some good ones but in general they're pretty woeful affairs.

Narrrrh, don't agree with you Andy, I think there great. I've even used them for trotting luncheon meat catching chub and had excellent results. I also know a few people who use them for trotting worm and shrimp for salmon.
