Nice fish!! Looks bigger than 14 but i'm just guessing

I would say between 14 and 16 but of course all we can do is guess going off what we have caught ourselves. Great fish either way.

Dales. they are up here but not in large numbers from what im lead to believe. we hear from the odd person of them being in waters we fish but yet to catch one. :( this has kinda perked me up to target them in a campaign so i think ones on the cards pretty soon :D

 

whatcha reckon Anders ? go for a grassie campaign the next week or 2. :thumbs: 1 to strike of our list matey

I've never caught one so it was only a guess - I just thought, if that was a chub, how big would I expect it to be? :blink:

Been out all day - it's been busy on here - thanks for all the comments chaps! I suspect it's a pound or two more than 14 but who knows. I settled for a quick photo and release rather than leaving it in the net while I ran to the car and back. Well chuffed with it especially as:

 

Finding myself between a finished pike season and a summer eel campaign, I thought maybe I should try for something I'd not caught and decided grassie. First issue was none of my club waters had any. Then one of my club renewals drops through the door last Friday with news of a new water. The Membership Sec. has hand written on the top "apparently contains large grass carp". I hadn't mentioned grasssies to him but he knows I like the oddball speci species.

 

That's the venue sorted then. So Monday I bob down there for 4pm and have a wander round. I see two grassies on my travels (first time I've even seen one) and a bunch of small carp. Set up with freelined floating flake and kick back in the sun. The commons are spawning and flying (literally) all over the shop, but no sign of the grassies. Then at 5pm a pod of three appear heading towards the floaty flake but there's a really small common already on it and it looks like I've blown it. But no - the common can't handle the the humungous ball of bread, backs off and comes back in for seconds. That's when the lead grassie headbutts it out of the way and snaffles the flake for itself. Short scrap and into the net. Challenge done in an hour. Oops.

 

Everything I read about them prior to the trip kinda rang true. It did a couple of really fast but very short runs then came to the net really easy. It seemed the more I pulled the more it pulled, but if I was gentle the fish just gently wallowed to the net. Once in the net it was a different story - it went ballistic. Margins whipped up with white water, me holding the spreader block to stop the whole lot going in as the carp leapt and thrashed on a mission to escape. I've read one grassie angler saying that if the fish comes easy to the net, he scares it with the net thereby getting a good fight and a calmer fish in the net. Might try that if I get another! I've updated the challenge to "another grass carp".

 

I'd say they are like a mullet in looks and action (when they get going).

 

Small bony mouth doesn't have teeth and gives a good finger pinch but ok for unhooking.

 

 

Anyway this is all a distraction until I get eeling again come season open - fingers crossed for a new PB!

 

What a goddamn warble........

No mate. know of one water that's had them stocked for sure but don't know if there's any left. Heard of another water that again, has had them stocked but who knows?

 

They do exist up here but they were usually stocked in small numbers as a method of weed control, which I've been led to believe is nigh on useless, since it's only juvenile fish that actually eat weed.

I stuck two albino ones in my pond and have yet to see them eat any weed :D
