hunt the fox

the rspca will be very reluctant as if they collect it they have no way of releasing it later ,theoretically you could take it on a car trip to a far off rescue ;) center and "accidentally" let it escape many miles a way

pity to kill it (although myself have killed more than i can remember for far less an offence) as its doing nothing more than nature intends ,its not the foxes fault it can kill the chickens its the chickens owners for not protecting them from the fox ;)

Contrary and cynical though the old git may be :D, I have to agree with Chesters, Barry.

Like I said, another will fill its place very shortly and you'll have to do it ad infinitum.

foxes don't have rigid boundaries like say badgers their wanderings (found to be as much as 15 miles a "night") tend to overlap anyway so your fox maybe foxes ,as said removing one problem makes an easier opening for another.lucky you dont have badgers they are nasty bits of work and chickens easily become food and nothing but the most secure runs will keep the buggers out if they get a taste for them ,foxes are more opportunist until they get in a hen house.

foxes are great "dont crap on your own doorstep" animals ,i have seen them live in banks with rabbits ,seen them live next door to chickens and leave them alone proffering to hunt further afield, ofcourse "further afield" is another foxes larder on "his" neighbours :D

It's all good advice Barry.....if you don't want predators, don't feed them.....making the pen secure is the only way. Metal cage traps can be effective but to kill the animal humanely you'll need a (legal) gun of sufficient power (not no.6 shot that they frequently get peppered with by 'sports' shooters) and the balls to do it....not easy when the little things staring up at you with soulful eyes (or more likely spinning like a top as it's so terrified). Get your neighbour to accept the fact that she needs to house her chickens properly and let the foxes get on with killing rats and mice!

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

We used to have chickens, and our neighbors still do. Both of us just had a normal chicken run surrounded by an electric fence, never had a problem. And there were definitely foxes about because we saw them in the field at the bottom of the garden. I would try an electric fence before you thinking about trapping or shooting because like i said, it worked really well for us :)

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."

As far as I know you're not allowed to relocate foxes Barry. There are several fox deterrents on the market, but I don't know how effective they are. It's not illegal to kill them, so long as you do it humanely. I think the best way is to make sure the chickens are housed in a 'fox proof' area.

If in doubt, I'd contact the RSPCA, for advice. They might even take it away for you.

Right, YES Foxes ARE classed as vermin and the RSPCA will do nothing at all about one unless it is hurt or trapped!! Mind you it's like Grey Squirrels they are not native and so as such you are NOT allowed to release them into the wild once trapped. But the RSPCA?? Another story!

Best and easiest way Barry? Cyanide on a chicken Carcass. Don't HALF do the buggers!!! JUST be sure nothing is going to get the bait though!!! Or someone with a good eye a lamp and a .22 LR will do!

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

(If you can't help out someone in need then don't bother my old Dad always said! My grandma put it a LITTLE more, well different! It's like peeing yourself in a black pair of pants she said! It gives you a LOVELY warm feeling but no-one really notices!))

Not in this country mate! Foxes are not classified as vermin and poisoning is illegal!

Barry, it is perfectly legal to trap the animal and to release it in the countrytside but, it may well come back and if it doesn't another one will until such time as the pen is made fox proof or all of the chickens have been eaten!

Releasing an urban fox into the countryside won't be a problem. Contrary to some beliefs they're no different.....just wild.

electric fences work well ,the only trouble is your garden big enough to plonk one in .

if its a say 120ft x 30 foot garden with fences then the electric fence has to be far enough away from the side fence to stop the fox jumping off the fence over the electric wires and your chicken coop far enough from the inside to stop it jumping off it to get back out.

remember electric fences stop foxes going through them by giving inquisitive foxes a belt on the nose to persuade them not to go further ,if a fox gets in it will run straight through in a panic if it spots you approaching.

unfortunately you cant mount electric fences on walls or fences if you could it would be easy

what i meant about the rspca was not they are reluctant to release foxes but they need a fox release site to put it in ,having a rspca released fox hanging on the next door farmers fence after being shot would not look good for the rspca :D

i read somewhere they will return home from even long distances so the easiest method is to fox proof the chickens

these chicks look good in armour ,some quite "foxy"
