Hemp

I'd read that hemp was a great holding bait for roach, so i picked up a bag of ground hemp at a tackle shop ......but foolishly didn't ask how to use it and what to do with it!!!!!

 

Any clues would be most welcome.

Hemp is commonly used in seed form which has been cooked until the seeds actually split.

 

The ground hemp you've bought is better when used as a groundbait additive or on its own mixed with a splash of water.

 

Hemp is great, most fish are crazy for it, not just roach.

I love to use frenzied hemp.

I have bagged on carp with ice on the water using the stuff.

For roach feed little and often with caster, tares or hemp on the hook.(you can now get little hemp looking rubber balls)

Bites will be very fast!

Ground / crushed hemp is used in groundbait.

So the stuff I've got just mixes up with groundbait, or just chuck it in soaked in water.

 

I've just got maggots as hookbait...will that still work.

Yeh that should do. I had my p.b. barbel of 7lb on caster and hemp! All fish love it! (and so do some people )

Aside from hemp, you might like to try these two.

 

Red Rapeseed or White Dari.

 

In my experience, Red Rape is far superior to hemp for holding roach. Hemp undoubtedly works, but Red Rape sends them potty and once introduced, will hold shoals of roach for many days. White dari is also good but not as good as Red Rape.

 

For both of the above seed types, just soak for two days prior to use. White Dari smells like mature cheese if soaked for a few days so keep it out of the house or you'll have the missus hot on your heels!!

 

Both seeds can be purchased from any good seed merchant or from Haiths of Cleathorpes.

PS. Red Rape is also a big winner if pre-baiting for carp as well. Especially those carp that have seen it all before. For terrific results, choose a silty area that most avoid and introduce the Red Rape over a few days. Then fish any boilee right over it in the silty goo.

Haith's. You'll find it under poultry and game bird seeds.

I have fished a lot of years and I too am quite astonished how TrentBarbeler can have such faith in a seed few of us have ever heard of.

Rapeseed that I've seen are exactly the same as cabbage seeds, totally round, small, and I doubt can be put on a hook. Methinks Trentbarbeller has devoted some serious time to this or knows a man who has. Further investigation beckons!
