John Wilson Signature 11-13' Avon Quiver Deluxe

Hello all,

Just wondering if anyone on here has spent any time using the rod in the topic title. I currently don't have a quiver tip capable rod. I'm in the market for one and was hoping the fishing gurus on here could point me in the right direction. I'm looking for a rod anywhere up to and maybe above £100. I'll mainly be using it to fish for bream, not especially large ones. Depending on venue the biggest in any of the lakes I fish is ~5lb (apparently). I'll be using it in other ways too i'm sure, my fishing varies a lot from day to day. Hope this is enough information to base an opinion on.

So basically any advice welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Poleaxe,

I personally am not a big lover of the John Wilson Avon Quiver 11' -13', although in honesty I tend not to like variable length rods I always feel there is a lot lost in the way of compromise.

To be fair it is a very popular rod and loved by many so perhaps its just a personal thing with me.

I recommend the following from personal experience:

J.W Young Avon/Quiver rod 11'0 about £60.00 - Ebay - to see the rod details J W Young homepage

Leeda XL Feeder rod 10’ 3.04m about £18.00 - Lathams

Drennan 12' Specialist Avon Quiver Rod £100 - Banks and Burr - to see the rod details

Drennan 12' Matchpro Medium Feeder Rod £100 - Banks and Burr - to see the rod details

I believe any of these rods will suit your needs But look around for the cheapest before buying

I have the 12 foot Drennan Specialist Avon Quiver in 1¼ lb TC. It comes with two top sections (Avon and quiver) so can be used as a ‘normal’ rod too. I have trotted with it and it worked well but I’ve not used it as a float rod on stillwater so can’t comment on that. The three glass quivertips you get are 1, 2 & 3oz and what I like about these is that they are very visible in poor light conditions or against a background of trees. At first I thought they were luminous but that’s not the case.

Also available in higher test curves if you want a bit more oomph but I’ve found the baby of the range to be a fine general purpose quiver rod.

It's never a 'six', let's put it back

I have a couple of JW Avon/Quivers, an 11ft and a later 11-13ft, but Ive not had hold of the latest ones which i believe are made at the Jarvis Walkers factory (wherever that is) now.

IMO the blank on my 11-13 when used at 11ft is just as good as my earlier 11 footer, but IMO and as others have said the two foot extension doesn't do the action or balance of the rod any favours. But at 13 foot it is still very usable.

All in all whilst not a great rod at any discipline, its a very good value for money rod and worth every penny of its £50 IMO.

Thanks for the insight guys. I'll be checking out the recommended rods throughout the day as I'm off work through illness. It does look like I'm going to be leaving the 11-13' one though for the reasons mentioned, unless I use it just as 11'.

@teme_man: I don't necessarily favour stillwater bream fishing, It's just I don't really have a suitable rod for that type of fishing yet as I've not been doing it long and it's a fish I like to target only on certain waters :)

I've not heard of any good rivers to fish around my way so haven't even tried it yet.

Not really an option for an every day kinda place to go. We're looking at 70 miles plus from where I live. I'll go one day and try my hand at a bit of river fishing but I'll be sticking to the local stillwaters for now :) Thanks for putting me onto them though.

Right here goes:

map matchtek feeder

I use one of the original Map Parabolix Matchtek special edition feeder rods and over the years it has handled double figure carp down to silver fish of an ounce or less.

I would suggest buying a multi tip feeder rod such as the one from MAP or the first one of these from Daiwa or shimano.

You need to be looking for a multi tip rod of about 12 or even 13ft so you can change tips to suit conditions and also be able to cast a medium sized feeder a good distance accuratly.

For tip fishing I also use an old 11ft shimano powerloop medium/heavy feeder rod that I use for the method or when using big feeders where a lot of bait is needed.

I have a masterline/wilson 11/13ft multi tip barbel rod but only use it (so far) with the hollow tip top (not the quiver) with bobbins or very heavy float/freelining work.

Thanks for the continued rod advice guys, it's all good stuff.

I was going to ask you where you live, should have done ;) But there MUST be some moving water near where you live, can't have you fishing those commercial type places when you could be really enjoying yourself.

So give us a clue...is it near Mousehole? :D

I live in a town called St.Austell. I might be wrong but I think most of the bigger rivers round here are tidal and probably don't have coarse fish in them. I could be wrong though. There are lots of small leats etc around that have the odd small trout in but they're not too appealing. I've never really done much river research to be honest, hopefully you've got some info to shock me :)

Guest Chris Perch

I have had 2 of the jw avon quiver 11 - 13 for about 6 years now and the only fault i can find is at 13' they are useable but feel a little heavy for my liking and so have used them almost exclusively at 11' apart from that cant fault them.

I use mine with small baitrunners for all but big carp angling.

Had carp to 23lb on them and find them a joy to use at 11'.

my local angling direct have them for £50
