I have a question (so what else is new!!)

If fish are supposed to have 3second memories,

why, when you land a 'lump', it takes about 30minutes for the water to 'settle' again?

Speculation - some fish release a 'panic' chemical that stays in the water for a while.

It's a complete myth that fish have just 3 second memories. It's a good example of something that's been been repeated so often that it's now commonly believed. If it were true, catching fish would be so easy that I for one wouldn't be interested in going!

I'm not sure this is a memory thing.

If you give yourself a big enough fright - a near miss in the car, or a big spider in the bath if that's what you are frightened of - how long does it take before you calm down enough to consider your state as "normal".

This is a natural fright/fight/flight response, and as humans we release adrenaline into the bloodstream, which takes quite a while to disperse. Perhaps the fish response is similar.

I don't think fish have "memory" in any recognisable human form. I'm sure they have learned behaviour patterns, a genetic imprint which as a result of millions of years of evolution is perfectly in tune with their environment, and a short term cause and effect "memory" which allows them to adapt their behaviour to new stimuli, but I am concerned with the current fad for overlaying human emotions and behaviour on top of those of wild creatures (cheers Disney -you have a lot to answer for).

I had always thought that Tench had a three second memory.....and thats why they work so well on a poly ball rig.Got to swim to the bottom, got to swim to the bottom, got to swim to the bottom...er what am I doing here?

Ah maybe only Catfish anglers will understand that!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!
