Sea dead baits or if you don't have confidence in them try coarse fresh water fish :D

Going to let you into a little secret. fish small trout on a very light running rig...I have had more success on them than any other bait!

If the water is gin clear forget it. You will not get a bite. Autumn i have found to be the best time

Hawk those two points about sums up fishing for Zander at Bury Hill

I think time of year and conditions are the two most important things for Zander at BH. I have found early autumn and days when it pours with rain to be the best days.

I have never tried trout so that's very interesting.

I have fished on that main lake for 35 years and can just about tell you where your best chances of catching a specific fish and what method. BH is in a bit of a basin so collects a lot of muddy water from the surrounding area. Zander use up quite a lot of energy so after Xmas they are not easy to catch preferring to lay up like most fish. Autumn the weather is usually wet so it really puts the lake into a muddy bath. This also puts fresh water into the lake and being really river fish excites them. Zander prefer to ambush their prey but not in pike style but swimming around and slashing into the fish out of the dark waters. In autumn you see quite a few Roach just floating in the margins with slashes or head or tail off.

Large Zander are in general like large Pike and can't be bothered with all that slashing about. They usually come round in two's 5 minutes behind the shoal just picking up wounded fish or dead ones. I have learned over decades that if you are on the buzzer it will bleep a few times and could go on for 5 minutes then still!. Many I see strike and miss as the swirls of the shoal go through. This is because their bait is on the bottom and the young ones really are only interested in the middle water shoals of live fish I think this is where the river Zander differs from the Stillwater in this style of hunting. So they are really striking on nothing but I can see why as 5 minutes can be a long time of quite a bit of beeping but no take. but if you can hold your nerve the bleeps will go as the slashing army moves on and then you’re dead bait gives you a much better chance as by then the slashed deads have floated to the bottom and lazy bigguns pick up the debris then it’s time to strike.

Frozen baits too are next to useless because in the scenario above I believe when the big one come they are attracted by obviously freshly killed and wounded fish and I think that makes the difference they just know on a high pressured water like this as I believe 90% of anglers turn up with frozen and if the conditions are right and the zander are on the feed they have learned not to touch it but many youngsters obviously don’t so you might get one. Get down fishmongers the night before or in the morning slice it in half and put it on the hook. This is in general its not to say all .

You’re in with a shot of a pike too but that area for zander I know the pike rarely go. I know why? But I am not telling you.

Hawk, Dales,

Your replies are fatalistic. I've never fished Bury Hill for zander and probably never will. The must be the world's most emaciated creatures. What do they eat the other 330 days of the year?

I say, if they are healthy, they are eating SOMETHING. Zander are stupid (as are most fish), if they are hungry, and they always are, you can "fool" them with something - artifical - or offer natural selections. Hawk, after 35 yrs fishing Bury Hill, you sound like a rookie.

I don't believe either of you.

Snakehead,

I've never been "shut-out" walleye fishing (walleye are close cousins to zander) using what you would describe as "drop shotting" a lob worm. Keep it in motion in a rather quick start and stop sequence (stopping longer than moving quickly 2:1 moving about 24 inches along the structure or ambush line) . Finding the depth and edge for ambush will be the key for this species. Lobs trailing not in a blob. If action was slow I'd use a large soft plastic (large is 4+in) and try to imitate a dying motion. The strike will be at the MOMENT of the stop (IMO usually).

(An inverted drop rig is achieved by using a rig we use from a boat. It is called a "bottom bouncer". I believe it will work from the bank with a little tweeking by the angler. I'd have to experiment to know. And I could be ALL WRONG! If I'm wrong it would be the 1st time since 1955). You don't have to have a bottom bouncer - I just think it would work. I am a committee of one.

Phone, neither Hawk or I am saying that they do not feed at other times of the year we are just pointing out the most likely time of the year to catch them. Tickets at Bury Hill are not cheap. £12 for one rod and £6 for a second rod. So as the original post was about is it a good time to catch Zander we where pointing out for this venue it is not. I am sure Zander still get caught at Bury Hill in the depths of Winter and most likely at a better weight then if caught in Autumn.

I know there are a lot of similarities between Zander and Walleye but my knowledge of Walleye is limited and so do not know if they are active feeders during the day and in bright conditions. Zander are fairly nocturnal and even though Zander are caught during the day at Bury Hill the best time is last knockings before it closes to day ticket anglers or just when it opens in the morning and a dark miserable day is better and as Hawk pointed out the more colour in the water the better your chances are.

So if offering advice on when to fish BH for a Zander a warm dark day after plenty of rain would be my choice and if its raining on the same day all the better. If you are paying £18 for a two rod day ticket it makes sense to fish when you think you have the best time of catching. I think most of the Zander will feed after dark but they only have a Carp syndicate who can fish over night.

If conditions favour the Zander before the predator season finishes on the 14th March I will visit again and try for a Zander but as the post Christmas period has not been ideal for them I am not paying £18 for the off chance plus a lot of petrol. So I have been fishing the river Lea nearer to me for Pike on a season ticket and saving some money.

They can be caught but it's not the ideal time.

Stephen
