Bite alarms

I have just been looking at an advert for some new bite alarms.

They look very smart but then again they should at around 90 quid each.

They have a wireless receiver with a range of over a kilometre.(another 90 quid :o) Why would you be a kilometre away from your rods?

It differentiates between a run and a drop back bite. Is this helpful? Do you do something different if it is a drop back?

I've always thought that a bite alarm was just a way of alerting you to look at your rod when you're not paying attention or temporarily doing something else ( or waking you up, but let's not go there:D)

Am I missing something or am I OK with my Good Fishing GFx alarms at 9.99 each. <_<

Been using these (http://www.amazon.co.uk/fishing-alarm-Alar...5345&sr=1-7) for a couple of years and they do the job perfectly.

Personally i'd only invest in some decent alarms if fishing for perch.

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."

Of coarse you're missing something Dave, spend all your spare cash on the dearest alarms you can find and you'll be the tartiest angler on the bank, won't have any spare spendy money but you'll look the part, rearrange the last 4 letters any way you can

I find the drop back differentiation really really useful! The way I fish, even a single beep as a drop back means the lead has moved which 99.9% of the time means a fish is hooked. A 'forward' beep can mean lots of things including a fish....

So if I get a drop back beep or few beeps I strike immediately. If a single beep or two or even more I watch to see if it is a bite, or a liner, or the tow, or the wind, or a bat etc etc etc.

The FOX MMX alarms are the cheapest way to get alarms that will do this well, you can get them second hand for around 30 quid or brand new for 40 quid.

BTW the range thing really annoys me too! All that the long range means is that it is more likely to interfere with someone else's receiver!

Sorry it was a bit sharp and trying to be funny so my serious hat on now for you. My experience in the main is rain and damp. I may have had that one off Alarm that was faulty but you can't keep buying that brand to see if you did or not.

The cheaper one i had The Electrics just get screwed, I have never had this with a fox.

Like i say perhaps i had a one off but reading the many discussions on here about alarms i am not alone.
