Casting weight - Avon v Quivertip

I have a Drennan Super Specialist Avon/Quiver 1¼ TC rod. It says the max casting weight is 2½ oz but I’m not sure if that’s just with the Avon section fitted. I’ll be casting a 2oz weight approx 35 yards across reasonable flow but using the quivertip (the heaviest 3oz tip).

I would imagine the quiver section will lose a bit of distance but any danger of breaking the tip do you think?

It's never a 'six', let's put it back

Hi this is not a distance casting rod but 35 yards is no long distance either.

It is well capable of casting 2ozs that distance.

Most ordinary feeder rods will cope with this weight with feeders and your 1.25lb is a stepped up rod anyway.

Its not a pretty sight, but I use my 1.25 TC Avons with and without quiver's to cast 35g feeders (plus feed) that sort of distance with a reasonable degree of accuracy for example when I fish the Thames at Beale Park for the bream. They aren't in the Drennan league being the Masterline JW Avon, but I think the Drennan would handle this without breaking sweat!

Good luck.

Thanks Matthew, I tried it last night with the Avon section fitted and you're right, the 2oz lead made 35 yards with relative ease. I haven't needed to fish at that distance for a long time so it's just a case of learning what the rod will do and getting better at it, I was surprised at how much of a heave I could give it. I was also surprised at how cr@p my accuracy was, I'd sort of taken it for granted that I could cast

Just wait till you've got any sort of wind and a feeder plus bait weighing 2oz to see how cr*p your accuracy is Rusty! I would imagine its as bad as mine - luckily I find that despite what you read in the mags, I can still catch with my groundbait spread randomly around Berkshire! ;) M
