Boot Failure?

Recommended Posts

Got myself a new laptop and getting this message??

PXE-E61: Media test failure, Check cable.

PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE-ROM

Now I know it is the boot section of the HD. BUT tried two identical drives (Toshiba 40GB) and they BOTH do the same thing EXCEPT one keeps looping and trying to re-boot and the other sticks at the message!! Go to setup to establish the drive has been found and there is a password!! Cannot get around this as seller of laptop bought it as seen as well! So he doesn't know the pass. Tried the backdoor pass "phoenix" (That is the bios) and still no go. Anyone any more ideas without having to take it all apart and remove cmos battery please??

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

(If you can't help out someone in need then don't bother my old Dad always said! My grandma put it a LITTLE more, well different! It's like peeing yourself in a black pair of pants she said! It gives you a LOVELY warm feeling but no-one really notices!))

sorry m8 but in my experience its a battery out job even then it may not be wholly succesful.

there are certain softares out-there that may work, a quick google fo passworded hdd's will yeild results.

If you have a windows installation disc try that and go for a nuke and fresh install

is there not a jumper - tho its usually near battery ;)

You didn't test boot first?

PXE is a network boot system used in businesses. There is nothing wrong with the laptop essentially just the bios is set to NetBoot instead of boot from you hdd! If of course your hdd has an OS on it.

Enter bios and change your boot options.

To remove your password download something like this:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/CmosPwd_d239.html

You'll need to create a boot floppy or cd rom to run the file from boot...track down a USB floppy drive is easiest way.

Chances are you simply will not be able to remove CMOS battery easily without complete chassis strip down....and even then some laptops write the password to non powered memory where removing the battery won't reset the password!

Most manufacturers have back door passwords as well...and most of the time you can phone the support people for it, they generate it from serial number etc, hardship comes from proving you are genuine owner of the unit!

just popped into my head i bought an ex army armoured jobbie which wanted to boot from the network ,long ago now but it amounted to pressing an "F" number on boot to boot from the hard drive ,forgotten which one though

usually f11 or f12 to ontain boot menu options.

network boot will stop automatically and boot from HDD if it doesnt find a network boot loader anyway.

in this case its simply the issue that the bios is locked out with an administrator password so even if you want to change boot settings fully you cant.

no it was F2 or some strange number not the bios entry numbers ,another F number allowed it to boot from a floppy disk.

i think in this machine the bios wasnt changeable for EMP reasons ,it came from the first gulf war i think i mentioned it on here a long time ago

found my post it needed the operator to hold down ctl,alt and F to boot from the drive
