Newt, we have a series running on tv at the moment that takes a group of modern "A" level students back to the 1950's.

These kids are all predicted to get top grades in modern A levels....the first test they took was the old style "11 plus" taken at age 11 in the 50's.....they all failed!!!!!!!!!

 

One Kid, who was predicted to get top grades in maths could not do long division or add up fractions.

 

Also seems that a lot of 5 year olds entering school for the first time can't even talk properly.
