Course on the Fly

Big Steve,

Just remember, you have to smoke a fiddly pipe and dress like a telephone line repairman to flyfish for anything.

No problem, always smoke a pipe when fishing anyway (comes from reading Mr Crabtree as a kid). Being a traditionalist, I was going with tweed jacket, moleskins and boots :)

Slightly (but not much) off topic. Mackeral, big shiny lure, lead core shooting heard and dacron shooting line = amazing fun.....

Just recalling an idiotic comment by John Bailey in Anglers Mail to the effect that breathbale waders aren't just for stuck up elitist game fishermen. Maybe I should say that polaroids aren't just for working class oik carPers..? But seriously..like many on here I game and coarse fish and enjoy both just as much.- no need to perpetuate ancient stereotypes in 2013 Mr Bailey.

Over the years I have caught most coarse species but have only ever fished for trout once (the first and only time for charity ), I fancied having a go in my local river which is The Roding and what fun I had.

Chub, Dace, Roach, Perch and even Gudgeon ( the first fish I ever caught on a nymph) Minnows and twice a stickleback !! committing suicide I think :uhuh: .

Several years and I knew that part of the river backwards, so went looking for more fun elsewhere and tried a lake, I chose Connaught Waters in Chingford, walking around there catching Perch,Jacks, Roach and skimmers, great fun ---- I walked up the road to the Hunting Lodge where across the road there was a small lake where I caught a couple of new species, a small mirror and also a 2lb 6oz crucian BRILLIANT !!!!!!

If you don't give it a go you will be missing some real fun.

THE MIND IS LIKE A PARACHUTE.
IT ONLY WORKS PROPERLY WHEN IT IS OPEN.

My biggest Rudd (2lb 12oz) was caught on a fly at Bucklands Farm Trout fishery; it was about 15 years ago though.

After a certain age, if you don't wake up aching in every joint, you are probably dead.
