It was 3 o'clock in the morning when the wels catfish bit. Peter Neumann fought with the beast for a full hour before he finally released the hook from the enormous mouth and threw the fish back into the Rhine river.

 

I thought German anglers were not allowed to fish catch and release.

That's what I had heard but I know there are plenty of cat anglers in Germany that practice C&R, so it may be well one of those cases where some common sense takes precedence over silly rules.

It's like carp fishing in America. There was a time when NO ONE dare admit catching carp. Still, they were heavily targeted (bait census). There are no more sheatfish in the Rhine that before. It's simply a case of "coming out of the closet" and admitting you've caught one that got away after you weighted and had a photo session (slippery critters aren't they?) Sheatfish have become socially acceptable (reported catch), not any more of them I doubt. Growth rate alone would preclude that possibility.

And now we are trying to get rid of them. Literally tons have been taken out of the Ebro and killed as they are killing everything else.

 

Penalties for introducing them into other waters include jail terms, and when one was found by chance in the "Albufera" wetlands North of me it made headlines, and i mean in the mainstream papers.

 

Thr Albufera was intensively netted for a full week after that to see if there were more around. None turned up. They have to be reported (and killed)if we catch them anywhere other where they are already established.
