anyone know af any "howto" websites ,i am trying to get info on diy methods of mirror resilvering and silverplating worn silverplated items ,i have tried using a off the shelf plating liquid but its useless so need info on electroplating especially where to get the chemicals in the uk (pref online).

:) i used to have a set of "home mechanic" books of the 1930`s but had to skip them when we moved contained a collection of diy methods inc how to make frosted glass out of clear glass etc classic.

Believe NOTHING anyones says or writes unless you witness it yourself and even then your eyes can deceive you

None of this "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" crap it just means i have at least two enemies!

I think its doubtful you will find any sort of electro plating gaer in the market place, as they use things like cyanide and you would probably need a licence even to obtain any of that s!!!, best use an established company in your area, look in yellow pages if they dont do it they will know who does. there are somthings you just cant diy.

My 1911 "Handymans Enquire within" has a recipe for silvering mirrors which seems to use only fairly common chemicals: distilled water, rochelle salt (potassium sodium tartrate.. can be made from baking soda and cream of tatar.. see http://www.seawhy.com/xlroch.html from google!)silver nitrate,ammonia,nitric acid, shellac and red lead! can photocopy and send to you if you like, and any other sections, thanks for reminding me what a good book it is! hadnt looked at it for years!

great page ,cant wait to put on my mad doctor accent and get stuck in ,these old books are great ,i wish i haddnt chucked mine ,there a goldmine from the days of make do in our chuck it in the bin times :D
