Probably a simple computer question

Hi all,

this is probably a simple computer question to you but it is getting me fairly angry.

Why is it that when I am on AN I have to go back to the forum every time I have been on a topic? If I don't go back to the forum but just click the back arrow I get the topic from the last time I was on it but without the input that had been put in between then and now? clear as mud, sorry.

If for example I am on the sea section, have read a topic and then want to stay on the sea section but move to another topic I should be able to do it by simply clicking on the arrow pointing to the left, (back button I think it is in English),

but if I do that I get the topic on the sea section from the previous day or when I last looked. Any topics that have been added between one log on and the last are not there. This is bloody difficult to explain but I am sure one of you know what I am on about and can help me to sort it out. PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE.

I have another question but will post it in a minute as the last time I tried this I lost the whole thing.

Thanks

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

(If you can't help out someone in need then don't bother my old Dad always said! My grandma put it a LITTLE more, well different! It's like peeing yourself in a black pair of pants she said! It gives you a LOVELY warm feeling but no-one really notices!))

Alan, I think I know what you mean :D , I use the next/previous arrows at the bottom and top of page, BUT, if you have made a reply then go to the Back button and there is a little arrow on the right, click this and select the topic previous to the one you have replied to. You should wait until the post you have made appears on screen.

I am not certain but I think you also have to do this if someone else has posted while you are on that forum.

I think what is happening is that when you post, it goes to top of the page and so the back button only takes you back to the post before, skipping over all the unread ones.

Well having said that I will go for a cup of coffee, My missus reckons she has read that drinking coffee can stop you getting the Big C,

Hope that has helped Alan,

Edit; having just reread your post Alan I am answering a different question to that wot you asked :o

He did Chris but I lost it some time back. Newt is a bit tied up with a Catfishing site in the USA at the moment but I am sure he will get back to us soon.

Sounds to me like you're going back to a cached version of the page. Right click on your Internet Explorer icon and choose 'properties'. This should bring up the Internet Properties window with you on the 'general' tab. In the middle is the 'Temporary Internet Files' settings - click on the 'Settings' button. I have mine set to 'Every visit to the page' which means it always checks the page for updates before loading from cache, but I'm also on broadband whih means performance is not an issue. You also have the option here to actually clear out your cache which means you'll get new versions loaded initially rather than potentially getting old ones. Use the 'Delete Files' button next to the 'Settings' button to do this. It's often a good idea to do this once a month or so anyway just to clear out all the cumulated junk.

Having said that, the easiest answer is to use the 'next' and 'previous' options that are displayed top-right & bottom-right on each topic page. I open the front page for each forum, click on the oldest topic I want to look at then simply use the 'next' button until I reach the top - easy. The only time it goes slightly wrong is when you add a reply to a topic. A soon as you add the reply that topic becomes the newest topic and so using 'next' will always tell you there are no more. This is when you can use the browsers Back button to go back to the topic previous to the one you just updated (click the little arrow on the side of the Back button and go back 3 pages normally does it), and then use the next button to continue.

Hope that made sense :)

Yup,

I'm sure Newt will sort it out when he gets back.

Hang in there! :)

I think it has all been said. Since you run broadband, refreshing a page at every visit shouldn't be a problem. That was mostly a feature for slow dial-up connections and never suitable for a bbs like this any way.

The only other suggestion I would make is when you get to a topic page (coarse, non-fishing, whatever) do a manual refresh once before you start reading threads.

And (it's been mentioned) when you have posted, best to get back via a click on the topic at the page-top rather than using back buttons.
