Veggie power

Summat I saw last night on BBC2's Learning zone was a bit surprising!

A guy had a Merc diesel,

forked out £300 to get in converted to run on.....vegetable oil !

Apparently all diesel cars can be adapted.

He reckons it works out at 45p a litre,

but he gets all his from fast food/restaurants for free and filters it!

The 45p is solely due to road duty tax!...

Dunno how the government keeps tabs of the mileage tho'

Any one come across this ?

Sounds flippin good!

& btw anyone looked into converting their car to run on gas? (I know a few people in Holland that have done it. & the other day saw a cyclinder/fuel pump in Swansea)

their coming down hard on those using it :( the law says tax is due on any fuel used on the road ,bit strange though do steam engines pay tax on water  :D

Believe NOTHING anyones says or writes unless you witness it yourself and even then your eyes can deceive you

None of this "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" crap it just means i have at least two enemies!

There is only one opinion i listen to ,its mine and its ALWAYS right even when its wrong

Liam,

There were some posts on this a while back and, strangely enough, the day after seeing them, I bumped into a mate who has a Range Rover that runs on veg oil!

He was buying the budget stuff from Tescos, but said that he does get it from fast food places, etc., when he can.

Weird.

Elton,

What I don't get,

is how the Government know how many litres you've used?

Mileometer?

Counter on the fuel pipe?

No of drive-thru's?

Diesels will run on the contents of oil-filled domestic radiators.

Go round to the local scrappy who, I believe, has to drain it all out by law.

They reckon that the yearly crop of alfalfa (clover type grass) of Argentina could produce enough alchohol fuel (Methanol?) to run the USAs entire vehicle fleet!

No need to pander to the rag-heads after all!!

There was a piece about this in either The Guardian or The Times earlier this week. It seems the practice is particularly prevalent in one area of the country, and the police are cracking down on it. It seems that it works best if you add a small amount of methanol to some oils, but there are many that you can use without it. The main problem is that some vegetable oils contain a percentage of water, that will cause rusting if used over a long period (but some are OK). The chip shop smell coming from your car is a bit of a give-away however, but running costs can be more than halved. You would think the government would encourage the use of such an environmentally friendly fuel.

Dan,

I got Welsh Water to fit a water meter (free) and it's more than halfed the water bill.

The Landlord did the same and his bill was halfed too.

You can get them to remove the meter for free too if you change your mind.

I can't remember the amount of litres you pay for by default (without a meter) but you'd have to go out of your way to even come close to that amount each month.

The price per cubic metre is so high that you have to be a single occupier for a meter to be cheaper, I'm lucky not to have one, but down ere if you have one installed they wont change it back later, My water rates are approx £600 a year

We have to pay for all the tourists poo to be treated as well a our own!!
