Indeed that is quite likely chesters, together with our own defence industry who armed him to the teeth when he was our ally against the dreaded evil Iranian Ayatollah Khomenhi(however that's spelt).

But that's the world for you look at Russia, Germany et al its the same friend one minute foe the next, it makes the world go around and it also makes a living for those of us who depend on the defence industry for our livelihoods.

Every cloud as they say........

Our perception of time as an orderly sequence of regular ticks and tocks has no relevance here in the alternative dimension that is fishing....... C.Yates

I take it from this thread then that Sadman Insane is a good old boy. Maybe we could get him to stand for leader of the Tory party and then we could gas the unwanted....oops I forgot, they want to bomb him too.

mr blair wasnt "democraticly" elected as prime minister as for bush who knows who he paid .as for unelected regimes they tend to be far more stable than democratic ones how many pm`s and presidents have ballsed up britain and america since saddams reign started :)

look at cuba ,one time 80% of kids went to further education ,free hospitals etc(then more advanced than ours) but the usa decided to blockade them (and has done for 40 odd years) and now russia has collapsed there back almost in the stoneage , any us citizen buying cuban produce or going on holiday there is fined $50,000 (i beg to be corrected newt)

all because cuba wanted self defence :)

Isn't North Korea a bit more of a worry. After all we know they are reactivating their capacity to produce weapons grade fission materials. Also since USSR collapsed what happened to all their dispersed, ready to deploy, nukes. There isn't just one centralised finger on the trigger there anymore. And the fragmented states which have a back yard full of missiles seem to be a bit strapped for cash. The political will seems a lacking in these areas.

Sorry forgot neither have the oil reserves of Sadam do they?

chesters1 - the US blockade of Cuba is properly The Helms-Burton Act, a bill

quote:

which restricts both American and foreign freedoms. Its primary concern is property confiscated from current American citizens during the 1959 Cuban Revolution. First, it denies visas to anyone who has done business with property that was confiscated during the revolution. Second, it gives American citizens the right to file in domestic courts for financial compensation for the property they lost. This right, though, is followed with the stipulation that the President has the right to waive this rule every six months if the courts are becoming inundated with lawsuits. Finally, the Helms-Burton Act also restricts the movement of Cuban diplomats within the US, closes off charter air routes to and from Cuba, and expands the broadcasting range of the government-supported, anti-Castro radio station, Radio Marti.

I have no idea what the specific penalties would be today for a violation.

I know there is a great deal of opposition to the continuation from US sources as well as international. Both the UN (numerous times) and the EU have spoken out against it. Also Russia, China (but I would have expected those), South Africa and quite a few humanitarian groups.

But it looks like as long as Cuba refuses to budge and Jesse Helms (co-author of the bill) remains in office and with lots of clout, it ain't going away. So basically, you have Jesse Helms and Fidel Castro as two hard headed old men who just aren't gonna budge off their long-held positions.

" My choices in life were either to be a piano player in a whore house or a politician. And to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference!" - Harry Truman, 33rd US President
