After the rebuild, all was fine. Yesterday no monitor, so "borrowed" video card from son's machine. Voila, system fires up, finds new hardware, installs best driver, and.........

only 16 colours. Most things look like they've been bleached. Can't get it to do more, ( other option was 2 colours! ). What do I do, until I can get to the shop and buy an all-singing, all-dancing card. Is there some setting I should applty to the monitor? Am I going insane?

Sounds like you've only installed the standard windows vga video driver rather than the correct one for the video card.

You need to have a look at the main chip on the card and download the appropriate driver for that particular chipset eg SIS,S3,ATI etc. some manufacturers you will also have to note the chip number as well as the type but others do one download for all their chips.

http://www.driversguide.com/ are a good place to find drivers if you can't find or know the card manufacturers web site.

if it was a nvidea card its imperative ALL the old drivers are uninstalled (use detonator destroyer)

then set it up as a standard vga THEN install new drivers , ati cards are a law to themselves (especially the "rage" ones)

if its agp check that in the bios it sees the agp not pci ,leave the interleaves etc at default.

So nearly there! Found and installed generic driver, all in full colour, BUT............

now I can't get the correct resolution on my monitor. ( one too big, next doesn't fill screen)We had the same problem when we fed this monitor with this card in my son's computer previously. All advice gladly accepted. Thanks folks.

right click on desktop ,properties ,settings ,advanced .the screen size is effected by two things ,colour (set it to 16 bit) and the refresh rate (under monitor) make sure the monitor is either named (the same one as you have) or the pnp box is ticked then set it to adaptor default in the scroll list ,windows will try the new setting if it works click "ok" if the screen becomes garbled after twenty secs windows will put it back to the origanal setting ,a warning do not set the refresh rate higher than the monitor can handle a dead monitor will result ,there should be a screen adjustment within the adaptor screen for screen adjustments and on the monitor also :)

Chesters, you have impressed me as well :D

Just for the record, and not being sarcastic, did you have to look that up or is it all in your head?

I find that if I dont do something very often I forget how to do it at all (yeah yeah, that as well :D )
