4x4

Hi all

I see the(Hampshire)local mps etc are starting to pick on 4x4 owners who dont use there cars for what manufacturers intended

What do they think they are up to telling people what cars to buy(what next??).

I see their point in some ways being that most of the percentage of 4x4 owners here are women who only go to pick the kids up and abit of shopping which is abit of a waste but im not gonna start complaining cos each to their own(id buy one i love the beasts) even if it congests the town streets but so do most cars it seems that there is a big differance between a bl##dy great big merc to a big 4x4??

but i bet the mp's dont sell their mercs for mini's :D

Billy, why do people always harp on about what 4x4's are supposed to be doing? We bought our 4x4 or SUV or call it what you like because quite often it snows around these parts so it gives the missus a chance to get herself and the kids home under these circumstances. It also has impressive safety features engineered into the car i.e an impact absorbing structure, 4 airbags etc etc. it is also a good motor on the road where it spends most of its time and not driving around in fields where the average British motor snob thinks they should be found.

P.S. I also drive a Discovery for work, very often along moorland tracks and in farm fields where our company's customers deemed it necessary to rent a corner to site a wireless mast. Believe me, I would not buy one of these crock of sh*te things myself for family driving on the road but it works well enough off them.

hi all

yep paul 4x4's are very safe motors when thinking of the kids.

maybe these mp's should stop and think how much these cars suck the juice then they would have a small point but(small)as for crock of ***** cars at least your cars have airbags etc i remember growing up with a long wheel base landy and with no mod cons it was a norm to spend 20mins shivering from the cold on the way to school :D but i wouldnt have had it any other way as i felt like i tower'd above all normal cars and very safe feeling it was.

id say not snobs but big kids with a car that could take a good trashing  when most would have been up the garage to hook the tail pipe back on.

they are durable and fun despite all else but the mp's forget the tax that is paid on fuel to run them which lines their pockets :D

Billy, I'd love to own a 'proper' Landy myself but have baulked at the ridiculous costs of buying and owning one. I was referring to the Discovery (not a TD5 BTW), it really is horrendously put together and utterly unreliable and I can't help feeling that Land Rover are happy about that as the one main dealer which I have experience of are nothing short of criminals.

Well Paul, you are not the first to say how unreliable disco's are! I have only had mine for a couple of months now and have spent around £600 on her to get through the test besause the last owner (I think) used to give free rides on the beach at redcar!! But as to reliability, I have not had one bit of bother!! I reckon its £2500 well spent!! 144,000 miles on the clock, and still runs like a good 'un!! And does not use any oil at all!! Which for those miles in a diesel I reckon has to be good anyway!! I had a ducato 10 van brand new and that would use 5 litres of oil every 5,000 miles!!

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

Chris, if you've got yourself a good one then well done to you. There are four of us in my department who run Disco's and mine is not the worst but after 67K miles I'm on my second gearbox, prior to that I was assured 3 separate times that changing the gear selectors would cure its problems, 4th clutch, 2nd rear diff, 2nd steering rack, 3rd set of front discs (not pads), 4 millionth rear light bulb etc etc. To be fair to it we do run them very heavily laden (it's the commercial van version). Quite literally, it doesn't go in for a routine service anymore it always needs something else doing to it.

Disco schmisco. Disco's are crap. Especially some of the earlier models. If you want a 'proper' 4x4 then get a proper Land Rover. I used to have a 12 seat Defender 110 LWB. It was the TDi version and it was the k9 gonads. The kids loved it, even if the wife was not too keen on it.

What MPs are making the noises? I live in Hampshire too and would like to know.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.
