we may have been invaded a few times but even the power of the legions never tamed even the english research has found that when hadrians wall was built to keep out the northern ruffians a few ditches and dykes had to be built BEHIND the builders (the valum? i think) to keep the builders from being attacked from behind most cheiftans were buttered up with goodies and the "roman way" but peace was never a sure thing after the romans left everything returned to normal

the other invaders the vikings ,jutes, scoti,angles and saxons etc (not in historical timeline) tended to attack ,pillage and depart ,though in later times tended to employ a less confrontal way and intermarried and intergrated this way, the normans came by force ,held by force and subducated their minions by cruelty , the landowners were norman their subjects still unbowed but through cruelty subservant , to this day this is the case although the norman ancestoried landowners can be counted on one hand (ish) france is more british through numerous conquerings than britain is french , now all is left is england ,the rest have regained partial independance
