Lets be honest here lads, Beckhams goal in the DEFEAT of Argentina was probably the greatest sporting moment of 2002, the whole country was in raptures. The TEAM performance that day was pretty awesome to, and I will forever be proud to say "I was there".

But that girl can not half run,and she is the one that got most of the publicity in the run up to the programme.

I voted for Becks, but good luck to the girl, she was a good winner.

She epitomises the concept of sportmanship and seems to be a very nice lady to boot......and well done George Best on the night as well.

Me been Scottish, why on earth would I vote for Beckham ... scoring a penalty for England in the World Cup does not merit winning the Personality of the Year title, though I sure it was a great day for English people. Over the past year his arrogance, and unsportsmanship has not done his personality any good in my views.

Paula though, has had an amazing year in my view and thourghly deserved to win Sports Personality of the Year, above anyone else, shes been a insperational breath of fresh air in British Athletics. If Beckham had got it, it would of been a joke in my eyes ... if England had won the World Cup maybe then he might have a look in, but I dont think he even should of been on shortlist.

Was great to see George Best get something also, he was without a doubt the best footballer to grace a British football pitch.

What's with George Best getting some kind of lifetime achievement award????

20% of his life playing football and 80% being p?ssed!

Is this the correct image to portray for the up and coming youngsters?

I think that every youngster should be made to watch him when he was at his best no matter if they are interested in sport or not, they should then be made to see what he is like now thanks to too much drink. What a waste.

An award for a life times achievement to me is just a very sick joke. :(

Seeing George Best last night has made me take a serious look at my drinking habits.

Paula's win last night was her just desert. One of the gutsiest performers I have ever had the pleasure to watch. Just a shame some of the so called footballers can't put in that amount of effort for the riches they reap.

Colin confirmed Paula fan of many years. I just wish she would stop nodding her head.

Got to laugh at this thread...

In order to be Sports Personality of the year, you actually have to have a personality! So that discounts Beckham for starters and certainly puts Georgie Best on very shakey ground.

It's dubious whether any footballers qualify on the grounds of sportsmanship... more like gamesmanship! For most of them it seems to be a case of how far they can exploit the rules, how many unseen fouls they can get away with and how good their diving technique is - there's precious little actual football played these days eh?

But they did in the days of George Best and he was by far the very best....and I ain't a ManUre or Northern Ireland fan. He certainly inspired me as a youngster aspiring to emulate him so that's good enough for me.
