I don't think the length of the rod would necessarily be a problem. I knew a guy in Scotland who could put out a complete salmon fly line using just the tip section of the rod with the reel in his pocket and the fly line stripped onto the ground, although he was an exceptional caster.

The problem that I can forsee is the diameter of the reel.

Most fly reels these days are large arbour, to avoid the fly line being stored in very tight coils. Fly lines are also very bulky. To load flylines onto a tiny reel means that you have to limit the dia (weight) of the line (and probably the length) and also that the line is likely to come off the reel in coils which will not aid casting.

Let's agree to respect each others views, no matter how wrong yours may be.

Sportsmen that's the sort of thing I mean, I have seen anglers using short rods on small streams but using a good sized reel and fly lines. I am struggling to picture a miniaturised fly set up in action but then I am a rubbish fly angler.

well if I can create such a rod then I will certainly be taking video footage of it! even though my fly fishing skills are only second to my knowledge of quantum physics and brain surgery! LOL

the chap in vid uses Cortland 00 fly line...which is supposedly small enough to fit through the eyes and allow enough to be spooled onto the new reels.

the line guides on the rods can be pushed out of their inserts to create larger eyes for the line.

 

if I can get it working correctly, or at least acceptably then it should be a good bit of fun!

 

its just a project. a bit of fun and a challenge to myself to see if it can be done and create an acceptable fly fishing combo for a pen rod.

as has been suggested; im doubting line hold of the reel with fly line, as well as the casting of it because of the eye size. but you don't know til you try!!

and ive done pretty much everything else I can think of with these rods~ from mackerel feathers to dead baiting for pike and all things in between...so fly fishing is really the last bastion to try to get working!

yeah im looking forwards to it!

received new rods end of last week, and taking them apart it would seem a fairly easy build for the butt end of the handle...but I don't think ill be able to keep the full telescopic of the rod..might have to loose the bottom section being able to collapse; whilst keeping the top sections fully collapsible.
