Tackle rip off?

Recommended Posts

How much does it cost to keep a shop running these days ? these guys need to make a profit to keep going.

I will gladly pay a little extra at my local tackle shop rather than e bay, if something is faulty you can simply take it back for an exchange, plus the good advice they give is excellent.

If Tescos can make a profit on sweetcorn at 50p a can, why can't a tackleshop?

I'm a confirmed ebay/online/supermarket angler, tackle is far cheaper on ebay/online than locally, bait is far cheaper from supermarkets corn/meat/bread or in bulk from feed suppliers for pellets/hemp etc

just about the only time i'd miss my local tackle shop is for a few maggots when I take the kids tiddler snatching. and I'm sure I could even work around that if I had too.

Thanks for that John, it is simple like the gent said. I think I've a lot to learn.

No problem, if you go to the 'Home Page' you will find loads of articles and rig info, that you might find useful.

As Elton keeps saying, "There's a lot more to AN than just the forums". :D

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

Is this a "use the search function" type website or can I ask without being flamed, WTF is a helicopter rig???

FWT Ive been fishing for over 43 years now and I still ask "stupid" questions (just look at my isotope thread!) And Im meant to know what Im doing!

Always ask on here no matter what it is.No one will think any less of you for doing so.They will offer you a good spread of opinions or at the least point you to where you can get an answer.

I learn new stuff every day.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Maybe we should create a database of 'alternative' products

My point is that these arte not "alternative" products but the very same just packaged and marketed differently.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

dont have time or the inclination to make my own stuff so dont mind paying.if your on a budget i have no doubt its worth it

I can understand that point of veiw.A lot of my "tackle development/making) came about through necesity in that I could either not afford it or it simply wasnt available.

That said why pay double on say Ebay for "carp" shrink tube when you could buy "electrical" shrink tube from an Ebayer?

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Makes sense Colin. I need a new tackle box and I know a tool shop that sells stuff that will do more than surfice, if I find the ones in the fishing tackle shops too expensive.

If I was to say "Plano" Im sure most on here would answer by saying "Ah yes they make plastic lure/tackle boxs" I would say not quite true they just make plastic boxs! Try looking it up if you dont believe me but they offer exactly the same model ( well ok slight difference in colour scheme) in both their fishing catalogue as they do in their tool catalogue........and guess what!

Once again Im not talking alternatives (though there are obviously perfectly good ones) but identical products priced differently for different markets.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

A helicopter rig is one where the hook length swivels around the mainline and doesn't tangle. It's a good rig to use when fishing waters you don't know and haven't the time to do much by way of research. It's quite useful in conjunction with pop-up baits as it will keep the bait clear of ant weed.

It's easy to tie, easy to use... good luck!

The biggest problem, in this situation though is anglers own gulability! two simple examples of hundreds-

Was in tackle shop one day when young lad came in asking for some size 10 Nash Swivels as there were only other sizes on the peg. The shop didnt have any.I told him not to worry as they were the same as the Mustad ones but just in different packaging and a bit more expensive....he wouldnt believe me and insisted the Nash ones were far superior.I even showed him that both had the same model number. As a final resort my mate behind the counter went and got a trade packet of the Nash swivels to show him....they were in a normal Mustad sleeve. The lad still didnt want to part with his cash for ones not in a bag with Nash on!!

Years ago it was nigh on impossible to get US lures for pike fishing. All what was available were the one intended for Bass. Some specialist shops started to import them and charged an arm and a leg for them! eventually people cottoned on to this and several "garage" based retailers started up. The price differences were amazing but some still insisted on buying exactly the same lure from a "proper" tackle shop as they wanted the "real" thing..........................

And so on...

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!
